What should I use instead of floorboards?

I think the same can be said for Plywood, I can think of no advantage to the householder that cant be said about chipboard. If you are worried about damp ingress when using chipboard, use a protect style chipboard with D4 adhesive.

What should I use instead of floorboards?

Well if you where to get chipboard, make sure its flooring grade and T&G If you are to use Plywood make sure its T&G and not square edged Of course it depends on where you are in the country as well. Plywood T&G flooring isnt as readily available in some areas and you will pay through the...

Replacing W trusses in flat loft.

If it is actually a premanufactured truss, with metal plates at the joints then its doubtful that would work. Now Im looking at your drawing and I'm seeing a hip end on the right and are the trusses stubbed at the back (going onto the concrete blockwork) or bob-tail ? IE does the roof...

Sagging lounge floor, wall above seems to be the issue...

To answer your question, yes you could take down the wall and put up a stud wall. However there is still the issue of a saggy ceiling which probably means remedial work. A reputable builder should be able to advice you on what needs to be done.

how to fix new creaky chipboard floor!?

Gemma, the best place to start would be speak to whoever built your house, if its a new build and you have just moved in, then speak back to the builder about the floor. It should be his responsibility to fit the floor correctly. Also ask what joists have been used and try and see if you...

how to fix new creaky chipboard floor!?

LOL well if you listen to these guys, you will be going out tomorrow to buy plywood t&g flooring, ripping up all your newly laid chipboard flooring and re laying the plywood. And be happy in the knowledge that the extra money spent will be worth it ? ? ! ? ? 8) But then you will still be...

how to fix new creaky chipboard floor!?

Yeah its not, people dry humor round here. Chipboard flooring is not to be confused with its lesser counter part chipboard. Lower density, not moisture resistant and not suitable for flooring purposes. That has a bad reputation for being like wheatabix. Trust me, there is nothing...

how to fix new creaky chipboard floor!?

LOL The fact that its chipboard has little importance of any squeaks. Its the mechanical fixing (how the floor is fixed) and poor quality of workmanship that causes squeaks (99% of the time) If its a new build, surely you can get the site agent back in for snagging and inform him of the...

    Loft storage project question

A Hip Layboard is a term used more commonly in Trussed rafter roofs, more commonly when creating a walk through valley in an attic or raise tie roof construction. Which is in essence what you are trying to do here. Basically a hipboard in a valley construction, where the valley is not...

    Loft storage project question

Just looked at your diagram again in your 1st post and there is a way to do it. Your Layboard, which is supporting your rafters in your gable, will have to be turned into a hip layboard. Basically rather than sat flat, the layboard needs to be turned and sat on edge to give better support...

Ridge beam abutment to existing wall

The rafter span is 4.1 ? is that overall wall to wall or the span from wall to ridge ? My initial thoughts are that based on the span of the ridge, a heavy piece of steel may not be required. It just depends on the overall building span.

    Loft storage project question

Those rafters you want to remove look like they are supporting the layboard which the gable rafters are fixed onto. My gut feeling is no they cannot be removed without finding sufficeint support for the valley board. .
