Just a quick update - I connected the existing live and neutral wires and ran a new earth as suggested (the new bracket slid easily under the existing rose) and the new light works fine. thanks for your suggestions, very helpful (y)

thanks guys, all very helpful. so can I assume, if I were able to secure the bracket behind the rose, then I could simply connect the existing blue and brown as suggested by Taylortwocities and run a new Earth?

Hello, I'm replacing an existing ceiling rose and replacing it with a new light fixture. when i unscrewed the rose I discovered it has 8 wires coming from the ceiling (pictured) - 3 brown, 3 blue and 2 yellow/green. my new fixture has 3 terminals for L, N and Earth. Do I just connect all 3...
