Yes, I've tripped a circuit breaker. I originally wired the two lives and the two neutrals to the lamp. I made the mistake of asking someone else if that was right but it turns out he didn't really know either. I haven't touched the switch

Yes, it was. I was baffled as to why it was there so I eemoved it. When I found out what was for I replaced it. @Taylortwocities I'll do that tomorrow morning, when I can see what I'm doing!
