The problem has resolved itself, we blocked the sink and overflow so that the water from the washing machine couldnt go anywhere except where it was supposed to i.e. down the drain, this must have forced the partial blockage through and all is well again :) Once again, thanks all for your help.

Firstly thanks for the replies. The problem has only started recently, was fine before. It is a purpose built flat. Ill have a look in the manhole to check for water. If there is no water in the manhole how could i fix this?

Our kitchen sink will fill up with water when the washing machine is draining its water. The pipe coming from the washing machine goes into the sink pipe before the u-bend. Ive had a look at the u-bend which was completely clean. We live in a first floor apartment with one other apartment...
