Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

I nearly ignored you but it irked me that this is quite obviously and demonstrably wrong as I started this thread asking very specific questions about a specific section of the perfectly reasonable part-formed plan I had at that time. The plan changed and we started talking about something else...

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

On that note, I was wondering last night if you can take two radials off of one mcb? Or in my case the rcd. I can't really think how it would be any different to a branch in the radial at any other point, or a junction box just below the rcd. It would simplify the wiring in my case.

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

That's exactly what I'm doing! I'm not starting until I've got everything figured out. I haven't really looked at lighting circuits yet, hence the stupid question. Normally I would have looked into it more first before posting but I was busy. I'm not sure I will have to prove much actually...

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

    Ah yes, amateurs again :p

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

I'll have to do some research into running the lighting off an FCU. I need three separate sets of lights, could I run a 1.5mm2 lighting ring off an FCU? Or take a new spur for each set?

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

For my own sanity, people are saying I can use something like this https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F261284772516 (first one I found though I assume it will have to be metal?) and wire the socket straight off of it? Because overload protection is...

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

Hmm guess you're right, not really any advantage to a CU Yes sorry I wasn't thinking straight there, amateurs for you :-P

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

I get that, but it's not actually much of a problem in my case is it? Ultimately I don't really care which one trips, so long as one of them does! But I guess I could put the sockets on a <26A rcbo then it's all gravy?

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

I I actually think lights should not be on an rcbo so if they go the sockets go as well! So in the angle grinders case it would stop spinning when I can no longer see it. Small ones lock on so you can hold a separate part of the body so could be dodgy if you can't see it to find the switch again.

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

Submain is not on an RCD and I don't really have space to put it on one. Maybe I could get away without a CU but at £30 I wouldn't be saving myself much! Now I think of it, might be worth putting the sockets on an rcbo so if they go I'll be able to see the angle grinder I've got wedged up...

Garage wiring - CU with greater capacity than submain?

Now that I've got permission from the council to start my garage wiring, there are a few questions I'm not sure about. Background: For the CU would be simple for me buy one with one 32 and one 6A mcb and a 40A rcd already fitted. There is an existing submain going to an outhouse that I'm...

What is required for building regs application?

I had wondered about that but thought the potential savings if any probably not worth it anyway

What is required for building regs application?

Not really, but it's more fun. I can't imagine an electrician could install and test it for less in west london but maybe I'm wrong. I wrote this before but its 6 internal sockets, 1 external socket, 2 external pir lights, 2 other external lights, roller garage door, 4 strip lights, two internal...

What is required for building regs application?

An update for anyone looking in the future, I submitted my application with only a small sentence saying I want to install 6 sockets, 3 light switches etc and nothing else really. Council asked for payment, then earlier this week I got a call from the contractor asking when they can come and...

Did you ever get it to work? Was thinking about installing ECO RF and Evohome via OpenTherm until I read this :(

What is required for building regs application?

No, to be honest I wanted to keep the question as simple as possible to maximise my chances of an answer, whenever I've tried contacting them in the past they haven't bothered replying! Also I realised if I do it on notice I don't need to send anything when I apply. If they ask for anything...

What is required for building regs application?

The council got back to me in record time and confirmed that it does indeed include testing and that the council uses a third party for it. I have it in writing now as well so they shouldn't be able to back out of it! Looks like I might have to give it a go! With regards to my original question...

What is required for building regs application?

It may have come across like that the way I wrote it, but in my defence I never actually thought that. I haven't gone through everything yet and figured out what I need, I was working on the assumption the CU would be ok but knew I'd have to check. But that wasn't the purpose of this thread so I...

What is required for building regs application?

I'm not disputing you are right in this case, but incorrect as the blanket statement this was presented as For you, maybe. My time is free. This isn't the time or the place for philosophy but I would dispute that first part. Agreed it is isn't always a sensible idea, but basic electrics...

What is required for building regs application?

I was assuming they used a third party contractor to do it for them. I will have to check, but if it doesn't include the testing charge what the hell is the £269 for?!? Pretty poorly, but I'd be impressed if someone could knock it out in 5 or 6 hours (ie less than a day). 6 internal sockets, 1...
