yep, with power still off, meter bleeped between L and T holes. so stat is OK. one question: what range of resistance would mean the element was faulty, even if not 100% faulty? My reading was 19.6

    immersion query

no i said there was continuity between the L and T terminals - which proved the stat was working ... and after getting 19.6 ohms on the resistance reading from N to T it proved the element was Ok to (even though it is slightly above the 17.6 or whatever rating would be exact)!

ok will do. just to double check, couldn't i just take the fuse out of the connection unit (right next to it) and test continutiy between the 2 ends of the cartridge?

don't touch the cable or probes? I'll have to touch them to do the test?! i've tested continuity so the stat is not working, so this test is just to prove in other words voltage is getting the to heater (ie the fuse hasn't blown)?

ok, this is safe tho right with the power on?

just tested and it read 0. did it with power off. that's correct isn't it?

hnag on, will check. what range should be used for this ?

i have proved the switch is working by testing continuity between L and T terminals (should i do a resistance test here also). Then I did the resistance test and got 19.6 reading. So proves the element is fine. (although working out, using the WIV and VIR triangles! I should have 17 ohms...

yep i believe between 17-19 is the OK range for a 3KW heater element. Glad I got to test it properley now from finding the right range. Thanks for your help. And as continuity was between L and T then all should be ok. So the no hot water problem is because of what?!!!! Ahh!

Just done it . It was 19.6

yep, ok got it. it's just next to the continuity setting.

Yes it has 200. (This is up by the V section).

meter has got 200k setting for ohms.

I know how to use it safely, i just am not sure if my meter is dodgy or what! I tested safely and easily for continuity. Some posts on here vary, some say resistance should be about 18 ohms for a 3kw heater. My meter just styas on o when testing resistance from N to T terminals. So why...

    immersion query

tested N to T on resistance, the 200K setting. Just flashed a few random numbers then went back to 1. (which is the normal setting).

Guys (or gals)!! I know how to use a multi meter. I am not silly and just need to know exactly how to make sure the element has broken. Surely it can't be hard to work out?

    immersion query

Hi again. No it's not part of my course. It's a real problem! I have isloated the supply, and tested for continuity and the probes bleeped as supposed to. Then I have now tested between L and N on resistance setting, Ohms 200k. But the meter doesn't read anything, it flashed a few...

    Boiler help pleease

Thanks for your help and I will get my hands on a few boiler manuals now! One thing that is still not 100% clear, and I am trying to work out on my own! Is.. when a boiler with non permanent pilot is satisfied (ie from the room stat being satisfied), does the gas supply just instantly shut...

    immersion query

Just did a continuity test between Live and through the stat on an immersion and the multimeter bleeped (so was continuity). Then did the same from L to N and bleeped once again (so continuity). Also do double check, did it from T terminal to N and it bleeped again. So why does the water...

Agile - I do actually go on a course. But I am nearly finished Level 2 and have been looking up Level 3 in advance. I am trying to understand a lot now as Level 3 is a lot harder and I want to get a head start!! I also have books, by R.D. Treloar, Heinemann, Steve Muscroft, Blower, and a...
