Rainwater barrel without hookup to drainage system.

I would personally advice against this as these barrels fill up in no time & overflow (especially with our new wetter climate). The problem being it'll cause surface water around the barrel, which could freeze causing a hazard. It will need some sort of overflow. Is there room for a soak away as...

    Replacing Flat Roof

£500 I'll use a high quality cling film system as opposed to EPDM and I'll start tonight with my miner's light. Oh and Roy & Pete will be out tomorrow to finish it off :P

    Roof in need of replacement?

Looks like poor quality slates with defects. The more worrying part of the image is the poor lead flashing around the chimney. Is there any under-felt?

    Roof join/secret gutter kick-up

I suppose on the basis the slates are angled inwards may invite the water to run beyond the secret gutter. Very hard to say. It may well be he's used the wrong type of GRP valley. I don't think the neighbours roof has anything to do with it. Get him to sign a document guaranteeing the valley not...

Leaking 15 degree roof with Velux windows and Sandtoft 20/20

It shouldn't leak anyway. Membrane isn't designed as a channel for water. Is the headlap 100mm (210mm batten gauge) as specified for 15 degrees or has it been installed at 255mm?

    DIY Re-roof?

Hard to see from the photo but they look like Marley Wessex's. It looks a straight forward roof. The best thing is to contact Marley for the correct specifications i.e. clips & correct nail lengths as you'll want to do the job as per manufacturers specifications & undertake the roof with the...

    DIY Re-roof?

If your doing it yourself it will take longer than a roofer could do it in. You'll need labour to help you as it is hard graft as you say & you need the extra pair of hands. The other thing to consider is if you hit a snag, where something is not standard. This is where roofers earn their money...

    Garage Roof

http://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk/sitepages/bwchome.aspx Trading standards run scheme. Should list a roofer or builder. Roofer will be the best person to undertake a new roof as it's their profession.

HELP- is this felt roof done properly?

Looks good. Nice and tidy. The reason it's not flush with the fascia is purely because there is a wooden batten behind, which helps reduce water dripping across your nice white fascias.

What it Costs to be trades person.

Someone who had a roof done said that the price for his roof hadn't changed in 20 years. It is hard to compete against the little guys but you have to adapt and think ahead of them. Once the recession is over they'll go back to site work. People will be more willing to pay for a "proven" contractor.

What it Costs to be trades person.

Nothing wrong with working hard. As mentioned in another post on here, people don't realise the costs involved. The main thing though is if you enjoy being a sole trader.

    roof repairs

No. People don't realise the costs involved these days are phenomenal. You need to charge a certain amount regardless of time for each job.

These photos show eaves tray? Sorry photos inserted now!

Doesn't look to be an eaves tray. There should be a hard plastic angled sheet if you have. They may have used a 300mm damp course, which looks like a flexible piece of plastic as an alternative to a tray also.

V.A.T how does it affect business?

Yes the dreaded tax. The question is though, being VAT registered does it attract work more than repel? Or is it just a blight on securing jobs? For example: If Mrs X receives a non VAT registered quote 20% less than another firms, will she be thinking "fantastic I've saved hundreds!" or...
