    My Complete DIY Rewire

Two 2.5mm and a 1.5mm cable in a chase... this is a wall with some very crumbly old plaster and very old uneven brickwork underneath. I know hot glue isn't a popular method but I don't need something fancy, I just need something that works, and hot glue works very very well!

    My Complete DIY Rewire

So this weekend I did two things: I had an electrical engineer friend come to take a look at my work. His words "It's not how a pro might do it, but it's definitely safe and to regs" - This guy has done houses, wind farms, and now electric buses. I also went to see new electrics installed...

Very good point, I will do that! Thank you - yes, I'm not going to bore you with the reasons why, but the end result is I am going to do this work one way or another. I'm using needle nose pliers. I cut a little bit with some nail scissors (by putting one end into the grey insulation...

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

It's not beyond the realms of imagination that the experts were selected for their opinion or encouraged to have that opinion, but at the very least there is some precedent set.

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

I've got personal experience of how a court interprets sockets connected via a 13A plug. In my house I have sockets and ceiling/wall lighting connected via 13A plugs with flex cable buried in plaster, and in a professional negligence claim against the surveyor who carried out the inspections on...

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

While my colloquial understanding of the word appliance agrees with you: 1. plugging something in via a 13A plug means that item isn't considered part of the electrical system 2. in law it is considered an appliance (ie. something plugged into the electrical system)

I do understand that. I'm not testing the Ze myself however I can design the circuits to be safely within margins on R1+R2 (if correctly installed). I've also designed the circuit to allow me to segment one ring main into two if necessary. When the Ze is tested, and added to the R1+R2 and then...

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

[/url] Is the question: Is an extension lead considered and appliance? Or is the question: Is what OP is suggesting an extension lead? The answer to the first irrelevant (although it is considered an appliance in law, apparently) The answer to the second question is yes. I'm not sure...

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

Two separate expert witnesses for the defense, with credentials, sworn in, and in court before a judge.

You've found the edge of my experience, yes. I'm holding my hands up high to that. But conversely this isn't rocket science. I've picked up a Fluke 1652 and a Fluke T5-600. Taylor do you have a sensible answer? For example "you should really also check xyz before you pass the circuits on...

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

No, connecting sockets with a plug is classed as effectively using an extension lead. And extension lead is also considered an appliance.

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

The official word is: If you connect new sockets to an existing circuit by using a 13A fused plug (which is what I understand you're trying to do), this becomes an appliance and not part of the circuit. So it is legal. It does work. But it was done in my house and I would shoot the guy who...

If I'm not connecting circuits to the CU then there are parts of the system I cannot test, ie. RCD's, EFLI etc If you could elaborate on which test I could conduct, that would be more helpful than a dismissive blanket statement.

Thank you. The truth of the matter is I haven't posted the testing I plan on doing myself yet, because I'd rather not feed the negativity. At present the first stage for me will be testing continuity of cable runs before and after each socket is added (R1+R2). I'll probably also do insulation...

Thank you for this answer - I'll interpret this as meaning there is no voltage drop from a junction box unless it is not wired correctly and is creating heat. I've managed to eliminate two junction boxes from the design so far. I'm going to keep trying to eliminate more. Future sockets I...

I realise hot glue isn't perfect, but it is works and is safe. 1.5mm is a lighting circuit, give me a little more credit than that for crying out loud.

Thanks Andy, appreciate the feedback. Perhaps I've tried to be a little too tidy. How much grey "matter" would you normally remove? Are you suggesting I should leave additional slack in both the core wires and the grey insulated wire? Or just one (or the other). Again, thank you, there seems...
