    My Complete DIY Rewire

I had a weekend off last weekend. Somebody requested a picture of how I'm wiring the sockets. Here we go: Before someone says the back box isn't grounded, it is. The reason I haven't run an additional ground wire to the backbox is that these sockets (MK Logic Plus) don't seem to hold 3...

    My Complete DIY Rewire

I'm asking for advice, I'm not asking to be told not to do it myself. I don't have a choice in the matter. I'll continue posting pictures and progress, and asking questions. I'd like to be able to present a good finished product despite all the doubters.

I'm not a pro, I've held my hands up to this. Not being a pro doesn't mean I can't do a good job of the work. It might not be up to professional standard but it will be up to regs standards and it will be safe. It will also be a massive improvement on the current situation. If you would like to...

    My Complete DIY Rewire

Ok thank you for your response, do you have any recommendations for reducing these risks? In a new property it may be possible to install a circuit without junction boxes however this is a 180yr-old property with a lot of quirks. All junction boxes will be permanently accessible and...

In context it makes sense - I can't get away with fewer than 8, adding 3 extra gives flexibility. Why is it such a terrible idea?

Quick question: Do I need to calculate voltage drop on a per-junction box basis? I'm planning to have 11 junction boxes for a ring main with 10 double sockets on an approx 70m ring. The idea being I can isolate any part of the circuit or turn one ring main into two ring mains if needs be...

    My Complete DIY Rewire

Practically since it became apparent the inspection/testing costs would be passed on at the whim of the LABC I decided I couldn't take on the financial risk. At the moment I'm just redecorating by embedding cables in walls and putting up decorative sockets. I don't like the situation, I...

    My Complete DIY Rewire

I'm not trying to cut corners or to do a bad job, honestly, so if you think I'm not putting enough importance on something then I sincerely appreciate people pointing it out.

No I responded to this - I'm installing the new cables whilst the old system is still live. Then taking out the old cabling once the new is connected.

    My Complete DIY Rewire

Noted, I'll go back and stick grommets on the backboxes I've already done when they arrive. I know a qualified electrician who has looked over my kitchen circuit and installed the shower circuit, I know he is a reasonably guy and will be happy to provide a periodic inspection certificate...

Do you have any suggestions for improvements? I'd be very grateful!

I have some on order but I'm not overly concerned about them. Not required by regs and with the cables embedded in plaster chaffing is pretty unlikely.

    My Complete DIY Rewire

Two more back boxes done this morning - these two are directly above the other two. In the bedroom above the dining room. In the second picture you can see some of the existing "wiring" - flex, surface mounted, and this is already in an improved state (I replaced some problem pieces)

The one I've done no, but the next one sure :-) Brown goes to blue and then blue goes to yellow/green right? ;-)

One of them is, yes - it's plasterboard approx 25mm from the solid brick wall. I'm using 35mm back boxes so the back box is embedded in the brick. The wires will be clipped to the brick also. The other is 150yr-old rock hard render. Took me half an hour to make enough room for the back box...

    My Complete DIY Rewire

Todays efforts... Two chases going loft to ground floor, backboxes installed on the ground floor and even a socket on one of them. Cables going to the loft and second floor but no backboxes/sockets on the second floor yet. edit: I was also able to do a chase for a light switch where there...
