You know, I think I've sussed the problem. I wasn't accurate enough in my first post here because I hadn't capped off the hot and cold water taps, only the hot ones and have capped the cold water supply going into the bathroom. This must be the feed into the F&E tank which explains why it...

There is a stopcock next to the small tanks, but there ain't any water flowing when opened (anti-clockwise I assume) or closed. If the main stop cock is the one for the cold water then it is on, but I at the mo I couldn't say where it is if that isnt it or whether there are any drain valves...

The only problem with that is I have had the hot water and heating turned on all afternoon to see if it would sort itself out (I know, I know). How do I fill it without turning on the boiler/pump?

There isn't any water in the small tanks in the roof level and the ball cock appears to be operational. On the 1st floor the hot water tank in the kitchen doesn't have any water in it, I think. What's the diagnosis? edit: I don't think I've isolated the feed.... the hot water at least is...
