    Consumer Unit Replacement

Just when I thought I knew where all the electric cables go etc and I had found all the can of worms this happens Kitchen1 by Gazzer23 posted 17 Mar 2018 at 4:09 PM I decided to lay a few more data cables to my mini servers in the kitchen and decided to make a small channel in the plaster...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

That is very true and that is why I brought it up here as I don't know the regulations whereas all of you are very experienced in this area and I was wondering what you thought about it. There is so much misinformation these days on the internet its hard to know what is true and what isn't...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Yes that is what I was also thinking but I think it would require the tails to be a bit longer because of the extra loop to go in from the side, but I can't change the tails with out breaking the new seal on the meter. It is also possible to come in further to the left from underneath as there...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Thanks John for that very clear explanation, it makes very good sense. In the case of my CU the main switch has no N or L markings and it connects to the adjacent RCD via a cable not a bus bar. The cable has a tee connector to allow it to continue on to the 2nd RCD. So in theory I could move the...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Well I am just not too keen on them running loose under the CU as I think its possible they could get caught on something in the cupboard and yanked. Since they are loose so to speak and the grommits could easily fall out thus allowing the insulation to be cut by the CU knockout hole if yanked...

Watch the video and at 5:45 near the end he says going through different holes doesn't comply with BS7671.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

I was wondering if its OK to move the tails entry as currently having each tail coming in via separate 20mm holes isn't allowed I believe as mentioned by Sparkwright earlier on, although I didn't realise fully until watching a video last night about heating due to eddy currents. although the...

OK thanks for that I will take a look and join in as I have not given it much if any thought as you probably guessed already, which is the reason I have never had it installed until now.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

I guess that means when they fit a smart meter they will have to move it to the other side of the meter where it should be in the first place. My seal was broken but he didn't say anything. With smart meters they will take readings quite frequently and will know your previous history so I think...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Thank you for your reply as that is most helpful, I was pondering on using normal couplers but thought maybe more contact was needed, hence the flanges.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

That is very true as they will as I said I would like a smart meter. That said it might be the same guy that does it, if it is I will ask him why he did it that way.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Hi guys I got a typical novice question for you. To mate the 20mm steel conduit with the CU I assume you use flanges on the end of the conduit on the outside of the CU and bushes on the inside. Since the CU is metal but painted, do you remove the paint around the knockout to get a better earth...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

It is strange now that I think about it as I told him the reason for it was to redo the consumer unit, so it should have crossed his mind.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Yes they are the incoming cables from the fusebox, I think he said 60A fuse. He said they weren't double insulated, so he added an extra layer.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Yes I was very surprised he did it that way as well. I was expecting the isolator after the meter and not to be sealed. Maybe he is thinking ahead about changing the meter in the near future.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

He said he was surprised that I didn't have a smart meter and asked if I wanted one. Ideally he said he could have put it in at the same time. Thanks guys for all your help, you have all been a really great help to me.

Had the British Gas Electrician come round today and install the isolation switch. He was very professional in the way he went about his job and was a joy to watch. 29244073_1634734443286559_7138656123250278400_o by Gazzer23 posted 16 Mar 2018 at 12:57 PM I am very happy with his work and he...
