Sorry hugh, there isn't a fireplace in the bedroom, it is just brickwork of chimney from the log burner. We don't light fire often and haven't smelt smoke but how can I confirm its safe? As I want to use this room for my son but don't want him to be at any risk. Any tests I can do?

Have just moved into rented chalet bungalow and it has a brick vent in the chimney in the bedroom. Is this safe to sleep in as the log burner is used from time to time? Also do all staircases have to have hand rail by law?
