    Insulating pipes in loft.

Had a trip up to the loft tonight, its around -1C outside but the loft is definitly above freezing. Its partially boarded so if there are any pipes up there, they'd be under the boards and above/within the insulation. However, there are no pipes above the bathroom, with the exception of one...

    Insulating pipes in loft.

Thank you. If the pipe has insulation beneath it, but not on top, would a quick and easy solution be to just insulate the exposed part of the pipe? We've had the house a decade with no freezing pipes, so I wouldn't want to separate the pipe from the heat that it has been receiving by adding...

    Insulating pipes in loft.

I'm considering insulating the water pipes in the loft, so checked a few videos and articles as you do. The advice from B and Q was what I was considering... https://www.diy.com/ideas-advice/how-to-insulate-water-pipes/PROD_npcart_100502.art I then came acros this video. He's saying...

Do you feel sorry for ripped-off customer?

Agreed. Unfortunately, there are many parasites in society that would be glad to rip off an elderly person, and sleep like a baby afterwards.

    Damp / Water Ingress Problem?

Has there ever been a chimney in that part of the house? Coal deposits in old chimneys can have a capillary action decades after they have been sealed off. Had a mysterious damp patch, turned out to be a combination of old coal deposits to a sealed off chimney, plus the old chimney being left...

Serious Mold Issue in Master Bedroom

Probably due to the lack of ventilation, after the vent was sealed. Do your neighbours still have the vents? Crack the windows in the morning, open them fully for an hour daily weather permitting. Invest in a dehumidifier powerful enough for the whole house, not the just a room. Make sure...

    Disturbed asbestos

Have to respectfully disagree, a plasterer is not qualified to comment on asbestos. And artex should not be dumped in a skip next to a public street. It needs to be carefully wrapped and disposed of by an asbestos removal company.

    Asbestos question

You've also got to consider what's behind it, if your works are going that for. I'd get an inspection done before work commences.

    Disturbed asbestos

Agree with accelerator, the removal company want the work and may not be completely honest. I usually get an inspection from an asbestos inspector before doing work; he gets the same pay whether the asbestos needs to be removed or not. He'll refer to a removal company, if necessary. But...

Leaving taps dripping, to prevent pipes from freezing?

Yes moving water will freeze, but is less likely to freeze than stagnant water. So if hiking, you'll see ponds freeze while waterfalls, stream are still flowing. Of course, with enough cold weather the waterfalls themselves will freeze. Ocean water does indeed freeze, but at a lower temp due...

    Disturbed asbestos

In my non professional opinion, that's nothing. I'd just finger in some filler and paint over. You'll occasionally get hairline cracks, you can see in the picture I've used polyfiller and will paint over. Excuse the black marks, they are cobwebs!

Leaving taps dripping, to prevent pipes from freezing?

Also from forbes article; "There is mixed information on this practice internationally as well. In 2018, Richard Burke of the Heating and Plumbing Association of Ireland told the TheJournal.ie that leaving water running is just a myth. He even went on to say that it can cause freezing of the...

Leaving taps dripping, to prevent pipes from freezing?

    Worcester vs Vaillant vs Gloworm...

I beleive heat exchangers are expensive, so looks like you were lucky. If outside the warranty, the cost of a new exchanger may not have been justified. Which is what has happened to me. With my boiler manufacturer, I had an expired 5 year warranty, little avaliable parts and a chronic...

    Disturbed asbestos

I have artex celings, they're fine as long as they aren't disturbed. Can you post pics? My understanding is that you fill in hairline cracks with a filler, and paint over normally. That's what a company told me anyway. Could be that the plasterboard itself beneath the artex, isn't stable...

Leaving taps dripping, to prevent pipes from freezing?

Downstairs tap now dripping permenantly when closed, internal stopcock only partially working. So booking in a plumber ASAP. Will also get an isolation valve fitted for the pipe that runs from the kitchen, to external taps. I've got tap covers on them, but worth having the ability to...

Leaving taps dripping, to prevent pipes from freezing?

That may be a part of it. Thinking of a running stream, its less likely to freeze than a pond but will eventually freeze. That's because the water is moving. I think the principle the North Americans are working on, is that its the build up of pressure during the thaw of frozen pipes which...

Leaving taps dripping, to prevent pipes from freezing?

Boiler running at 40C flow temp, keeping house around 12C. So no need to drain boiler. Both outside taps have frost covers, checked them tonight and they're snug. Got home in evening, first bit of water coming out of taps is cool as opposed to cold; pipes are in loft and garage so that's a...

Leaving taps dripping, to prevent pipes from freezing?

The article claims that a dripping tap will save the pipes bursting, as it relives pressure on the system. Why do you think that is wrong? If the Americans and Canadians are indeed wrong about this, I'd be interested to know why...
