    Fixing joist on steel beam

I'm not sure what you're describing, but it sounds like it could be a good idea. What sort of straps do you mean? I've also just had the idea of bolting timber (like a wallplate) to the underside of the steep and then using something like truss clips with twist nails. So it'll be like a wall...

    Fixing joist on steel beam

I would lose head height, need to remove and cut blocks, and have additional timber to raise the height, so I don't really want to do that. I may also need to rethink locations of pipes etc. It's a garage, so the additional height would allow more storage. I'm hoping that there would be an easy...

    Fixing joist on steel beam

I have a timber joist that will sit on a steel beam and will support a flat roof. It will also meet a pitched roof as shown in the picture below. I was wondering whether a screw would be adequate to prevent uplift or whether something like nails would be required? I would also put some blocking...

EPDM flat roof transition to pitched roof

I've done some Googling and thinking and came up with this idea . I haven't put the EPDM in the illustration, but it would cover the OSB and go under the eaves tray. The eaves tray would also have the added benefit of preventing the tiles from doing any damage to the EPDM. I would probably put...

EPDM flat roof transition to pitched roof

I can't think of a good way to transition from a flat roof to a pitched roof. I found this article https://www.rubberroofingdirect.co.uk/training-hub/pitched-roof-slopes-onto-the-flat-roof-fleece-backed, but would this design seems to have lost the gap between the trusses, so surely water could...

    Roof battens too short

I didn't need to double nail them . I got mixed up with the bracing, which should be double nailed. My bats are the larger 50mm ones, so I managed to get the nails in ok, and it was pretty quick with a nail gun. At least I know they're secure

    Roof battens too short

I've just done the roof battens for my extension and realised that the battens should span at least 3 trusses. I have two, which are only spanning two trusses at the ends. Do I need to replace these or is it fine? They are currently secure and double nailed everywhere, so I don't really want to...

    Mechanically fixed verge/ridge?

    Redland Regents. They're pretty big.

    Mechanically fixed verge/ridge?

They do, but ridge tiles don't, I believe the eaves tiles need two mechanical fixings and with the verge it would depend whether I have enough tile (more than half) for a nail.

    Mechanically fixed verge/ridge?

Are mechanical fixings required for verges/ridges etc. on an extension? My understanding is that they are, but it's very hard to buy mortar bedding kits and tile clips, which makes me think that nobody does them. My local roofing place didn't even know what a tile eaves clip was My existing...

Lateral restraint straps across diagonal bracing?

I have a small pitched roof and will be putting lateral restrain straps at the gable. The diagonal bracing gets in the way though. Can I do 22mm boards each side of the diagonal bracing and then go across all of it with the strap or should the strap be on a single piece of timber? If that's not...

    Diagonal bracing in same direction?

I was going to do that originally, but noticed something that meant I couldn't do it. IIRC there is a minimum size. I want to ply/osb it anyway, but I think I still need the diagonal bracing. If I had started from the other end then it would have been ok as the house is only on one side. I...

    Diagonal bracing in same direction?

Yes, going down to the wall plate.

    Diagonal bracing in same direction?

I don't think so. I think it's just generic instructions they have and not specifically for my roof.

    Diagonal bracing in same direction?

I'm doing diagonal bracing on my small (3.5m span, but 6.0m wide) attic trusses, and I've found that I can't get the last one in as my existing house is in the way. I was wondering whether they need to alternate between up-down, and down-up, or whether two can go in the same direction? I'm...

    Roof battens - BS 5534?

It's quite a difficult one as I didn't explicitly mention the BS, I just assumed that they would all be BS 5534. My understanding is that if I asked for 'roofing battens' then they should have been BS 5534, but it's hard to remember (and even harder to prove) exactly what I said.

    Roof battens - BS 5534?

I ordered some roof battens ('tile batten' on the invoice) from a timber merchant and they don't appear to be BS 5534. Is BS 5534 required for my pitched roof (it's a new extension)? Should I expect a refund? They are stamped with BS 8417, but not coloured blue/red.

    Brick spacing above cavity lintel

Thank you, that's what I though (y). What about the concrete lintels? I'm guessing that those do need ties?

    Brick spacing above cavity lintel

Is the Ancon diagram wrong? It clearly shows 225mm above the openings. Does the same apply to my concrete lintels (going into the garage), or should I put ties on the lintel (as close to the opening as possible or is 450mm fine?

    Brick spacing above cavity lintel

Each side of the opening is 225mm (every course of block), or do you mean normal spacing i.e. 450mm vertically in my case?
