    You must keep the 3 core (2 way) the wired the same at each termination. For some reason they were connected, with yellow in the Com. You can't change them around on one switch. Do it the way Lectrician has said. As the original way was done in yellow, you'll have to link the 3 coms with...

    I trust you didn't draw a diagram, Before you disconnected them then Nick? Was there any short strappers connecting all the coms together? and a connector block connecting all the Neutrals, perhaps?

    Either way, as John sates above, you will have to test the wires to see which is the "Supply" and which is the "Switch Wire".

    It also sounds as if it was a "Loop In" @ the switch and then the drop (switch wire) is taken directly to the light fitting. Was the two black wires joined together in a "Connector block", OP :?:

    They have to be "Interlinked" with 3 core. They can be "Spurred" off of the lighting cct. It is preferred to have their own circuit, but this isn't always possible. The AICO EI range are pretty good and easy to instal. Another would be the Kidde Click range. My preference is the AICO...
