    Yeah there are o rings. I can't see that the bottom of the pipe can be coupled

    Here's the product.... http://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/Regent-Traditional-Freestanding-Bath-Shower-Mixer-Chrome.aspx the "doodah" thing screws around as shown below and is secured via a grub nut. I think its just there to connect the two parts and not for plumbing reasons...

    Thanks for replying. Am happy to supply more info if you let me know what would be helpful? The standpipes are 40mm wide and the plumber says he can't get a coupling in there. -H
