Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

I guess it's possible that his 6000 miles a year is one long road trip...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

If it's only doing 6000 miles a year, maybe that's enough? Battery swap on a Leaf is supposed to be pretty easy as a DIY proposition.

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Should be loads! The anti-EV brigade keep telling us people can't give them away! ;)

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

As I tried to explain in Post#128, if you replaced like-with-like (i.e. a £1500, low-powered EV), I think you'd start saving pretty much the minute you got it?

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Yet you only talk about the 50 MPG £1500 car...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

If you bought one with similar performance, I imagine it would do about 4 miles to the kWh, so depending on what electricity tariff you went for, would cost around 2p/ mile to run - probably a bit less. More like 1.5p / mile. For 6000 miles a year, that would be about £90. Your diesel is...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

They'd be welcome to mine, if they can handle it! That was the deal when they took me on. Some folk get paid more money but don't get a company car. Them's the breaks. Other companies could do the same. But let me put you out of your misery. As a private motorist, you'd get change out of...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

I was??? Not sure I remember that one?

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Absolutely true (well, if you don't count the blood, sweat and tears I put into my day job, I guess)! But how much did you think it set the company back?

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Why are you comparing a £40k EV with a £2k petrol knacker? Wouldn't it be better to compare like-with-like? Also, if I wasn't maintaining the car myself, I'd be paying someone, but how much do you reckon a service costs for my EV? (Main BMW stealer prices for a £60k, three-and-a-half hundred...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Of course it does! I've never bought a brand new car in my life - EV or ICE, and if I was shopping for another car, I'd buy used. (So I'd get a used EV). Here's the thing though. When they took my last diesel off me, I could have had another one but I thought: "actually... I might as well...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Mine? No, it's a company car, and yes, used partly for business miles.

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Loads more than an ICE car. BUT, you're forgetting that ICE cars can only get their fuel from petrol pumps, whereas most EVs don't get most of their electricity from public chargers. Not much. Earlier ones and those near the lower end of the market that don't have heat pumps, sometimes suffer...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

So do I...:ROFLMAO: https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/369077/uk-electric-car-chargers-outnumber-petrol-pumps-almost-two-one 500 years ago, you'd have been telling Columbus that he'd fall off the edge of the world once he got to the horizon...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Of course, when every car in the country was ICE, they didn't all want to fill up at the same time, for some strange reason...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

You need an EV like mine - it just tells you what they are. It can even tell you what they are on your phone if you like...;)

Frequently. I'm doing it right now in fact, whilst sat in my living room, typing this... :)

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Might be truer to say "the cost of missing out on perceived flexibility"? ;) And yeah, it's (maybe) going to rise "dramatically" to... ...drum roll... ...5p-a-mile.. ...in 2028...:ROFLMAO: Good job we can all be absolutely certain that petrol and diesel won't be going up by then, of...

Would you accept a slightly thicker ratchet head if it eliminated socket swaps?

I'm picturing, in my mind's eye, a handle that contains the battery, on the end of which, is a head with 4 sockets on it, on a circular disc. You would index the disc round, until it was in the position, relative to the handle, that a normal socket would be. You'd then put that socket on to...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

If it sold diesel at 19p a litre you'd probably find a need quick enough though... ;) And yeah, I'd just get in mine and drive to the other end of the country right now if I needed to. I do it regularly enough anyway. I live in the North West corner of Cumbria, and there's a lab that we...
