Low reading in new kitchen ring

Guys the plot thickens. Just been back to do a new reading. Disconnected fused spur, and cooker. New results P/N 1.06 P/E 0.69 N/E 0.48 Better but still not there. Also took new continuity readings. P/P 0.67 N/N 0.67 E/E 0.35 (??) I opened up every socket and checked...

Low reading in new kitchen ring

pdc The MCB stays in and it's on an RCD as well. The appliances attached are working okay so it's also taking a load with no ill effects.

Low reading in new kitchen ring

The cooker cable wasn't new but is only to the start of the ring. Would it have that dramatic an effect on the reading? Especially bearing in mind the ring is brand new between outlets.

Low reading in new kitchen ring

I have just tested a kitchen circuit and have a low reading for insulation resistance. 0.353 megaohm to be precise. I have checked and double checked the test just to make sure. The guy who fitted it tells me that he split the old downstairs socket circuit using one end as the start for his...

    How to use multimeter

Fully agree. I'm always suspicious of testers and always double check witha volt meter. Bought a neon tester a few weeks ago to replace one that I lost.. It worked for teh afternoon I bought it. The following day I went to the same job. Switched the circuit off. Went to the JB and tested the...

    Downlights in a stone ceiling??

Thanks guys. I think I have enough to discourage him now. Obviously no-one seems to have already done this. pdc - It was getting late and I was tired. I was referring to a hybrid of regs, some of the 16th edition wiring regs (considerations to fire risk and all the other things we have...

    Downlights in a stone ceiling??

Thanks Ban. I have to say the structure was one of my initial concerns especially bearing mind 16th Ed Part A and all that. I'm going to have a read about CFL. I've never used them.

    Downlights in a stone ceiling??

Thanks andy They haev the idea that we will run the cables along the stone pointing and a sort angle grinder cut out to the edge of the light and a small groove up the core cut out to the back of the light. As you said. The best fire hood I've ever seen!!

    Downlights in a stone ceiling??

Okay guys here's one that doesn't come around very often I bet. A customer has just asked me to core drill a Yorkshire stone vaulted ceiling in a converted cellar to put in downlights. My first thoughts are - What a pig of a job to core drill holes deep enough, especially if it is LV and...

    Continuity

I suppose it could be if the circuit doubles back. The sequence of readings indicate it could possibly. Thanks

    Continuity

Thanks for all the replies guys. Andy, I understand the concept of the radial thanks but I was questioning how low the readings were. Or is 0.02 to 1.24 within the normal band expected?

    Continuity

Guys Test equipment calibarted and working and books in hand I have just done my first PIR practice on my sisters home and come across what I regard as some strange numbers. What is your take on the results? Continuity R1+R2 readings on the light circuits upstairs read from 0.02 to 1.24...

    Periodic inspections

Blimey, a tight Yorkshireman. That's a novelty! I was thinking more like a grand. Is that any good for you?

    Periodic inspections

Thanks pdc I've heard some stories of £250 for some PIRs which I thought was a bit over the top. You're confirming roughly what I was expecting to hear. A nice round number with a 1 in it sounds like a fair charge.

    Periodic inspections

Guys I'm now officially competent and have all the test equipment Alphatek can throw at me. I'm branching into PIR for rented properties. As a guide what is the going rate for PIRs these days? I know it will vary but a few different feedbacks would give me a good guide. I'm based in the bleak...
