Sadly the front sensors are handed. I fitted an Apec brand sensor and although now owned by NAPA, presumably still a quality parts source? Apec part no ABS1005 front right and ABS1004 front left.

The hub, inc reluctor ring, was replaced four years ago due actual damage to the old ring. I checked it whilst doing the sensor. Its the fact that the abs warning is flickering that bothers me.

The Topdon scanner was able to tell me that the rear n/s abs sensor had an issue. The warning triangle and abs were lit on the dash. I fitted a new sensor today and that has switched both warnings off.

It seems auto mode is for cars with CAN bus. My 2003 VW is pre CAN so I got it through manual selection of Volkswagon.

Following your lead, I tried European, Volkswagen and was then given the choice of System Scan or CAN bus Scan so I choose the former and that got the scanner working with the car. I'd been trying to let the scanner do Auto which presumably goes to CAN bus by default hence no play since 2003 VW...

Sadly, the ArtiDiag800BT does not seem to support a 2003 VW car's system. I did a scan and all systems failed to report.
