I would recommend the Vaillant smart controller with external sensor in order to get the maximum efficiency out of your boiler and therefore save you ££.

I’d place where is convenient for you.OR will lie the fibre accordingly after taking into account bend radius. My fibre was fitted to the rear of our property.

Of course it needs to be properly serviced. The poor reliability was in spite of being well maintained.

I have the wired VRC 470 and I like the heat curves and the way it uses the external sensor. Dislikes - size, loss of date/time if boiler turned off and it’s ugly. A friend has the wireless version but that has gone faulty so he is looking at replacing it with a hive.

It’s not easy being impartial when you have been stung. The pre condensing Vaillant we had was solid but I don’t consider a 12 year old Ecotec which we changed it to, “very early”.

My reading of the Vaillant problem is that things went wrong with the Ecotec range from about 12 to 8 years ago. Before that Vaillant had a justifiable high reputation and given later models are much more reliable it would explain why @helplessowner has been recommended a new one.

Vaillant. It’s been a stinker but I’m not alone. There are lots of posts on forums about them and I have found a lot of installers don’t recommend Vaillant. The Ecotec went through a very bad patch which they resolved but I would not touch another one.

Mine is in our garage and given we’ve had a number of water leaks (o rings, heat exchanger failure) I am so glad it is.

I use Sentinel x100 and add it through the Adey Magnaclean filter. Drain what’s in there with a tube. Add as most of the bottle and refit. Add the rest a day or two later.

I upgraded my old but reliable Gardiner alarm by using an Esp32 module and a Wi-Fi key switch. No maintenance costs and I get email notifications and access to my system via webpage.

Older network interface on the FTV? Cable/infrastructure issue? You need to compare like with like.

Is the RPI overkill for some of these projects? I like the considerably cheaper ESP32 (less than £10) for my home automation projects.

I completely understand the need to discourage DIY gas work for safety reasons, and I fully support that. However, I believe it's misguided to assume that simply providing information about a fault code will automatically lead to unsafe DIY repairs. In many cases, understanding the issue helps...

Gas engineers round here like Baxi for their reliability. At the moment when my Vaillant is replaced a Baxi is my likely replacement.
