Space is a character (ASCII 32). In this case the underlying software is removing empty tags, as it considers a lone space as 'empty'. There are many cases where empty tags are left in a post and so they are cleaned out.
No problem :) Regarding usernames, when we delete user accounts we are now routinely renaming their username at the same time. This functionality we hope to have built into the user cancellation mechanism in due course as well.

You'll be pleased to know that GDPR related bits and bobs are coming. It's something we have been working hard on in recent months. We are waiting on a few impending updates from some of our upstream providers before we're good to go.
