Correction to that, I did do it. It's a known fault, the capacitor does not last forever, they do need replacing. The true cost of a start capacitor is pennies, it is a good call out to put one in. :mrgreen:

The pump has two motor windings, one to start the motor spinning the other to keep it spinning. The start capacitor stores enough power momentarily to spin the start windings with enough torque to get it going, then cuts out and the second winding carries on. It probably is on its way out...

I had this exact same problem two weeks ago, The start capacitor has burnt out. The part from Stuart Turner is about £29. Take the old one out and take it to maplins and you can get a replacement capacitor for about £5. It may be slightly larger but you can adapt it slightly and fit it...

Doitall, can a thermostatic/mixer valve on a shower let water by even with the thermostatic valve being visually shut. Thinking out loud I know, but could it allow water to be pumped back the wrong way, into the header tank! making the pump hunt.

Oh and also, although you can pump the WC, it's not the best thing to happen when you flush late at night and the pump kicks in. Plumb it back to the mains if possible.
