Detecting 12v AC at doorbell button

Well I took the covers off the transformer and proved with the input side that the multimeter is working after all. I put a new fuse into the output side of the transformer and now have 19v across the terminals (from a 12v transformer!). Happy days. Thanks everybody who helped.

Detecting 12v AC at doorbell button

You could be right! I'll try it on the back of a 240v faceplate later on and see what it reads. Having checked more closely I've discovered that the transformer does have a 1A fuse in it, according to its case, so potentially that blew when the wires brushed against each other. Also, the bulb...

Thank you Mr Bloomfield. Good plan.

Detecting 12v AC at doorbell button

Yeah, in an ideal world the transformer would be more accessible but I wasn't going to compromise the design of the new kitchen for things that should (theoretically) never be disturbed. Just need to remove the top box over the fridge/freezer to be able to take the lid off the transformer and...

Detecting 12v AC at doorbell button

Thanks all. Having read your replies I've cut the feed wire from the transformer (i.e. I've intercepted the feed from the transformer to the chime box within the hallway ceiling) to get back to clean metal straight from the source. Unfortunately my multimeter is still not detecting an AC...

Detecting 12v AC at doorbell button

I want to use the existing doorbell button wiring to power a camera doorbell, which needs 12v AC or more. The existing doorbell transformer is 12v, 1A. So far so good. There are four cores in the thin wire leading to the front door button: red, yellow, blue and black. The red and yellow are...

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

That's a clearer photo of the flush inlet. The Great Wall of Porcelain in there doesn't look like a mistake to me. It's part of the pan's design. If it were a mistake I'd expect the flush to be weak, and it isn't at all. The inlet had copious amounts of white silicone attached. (You can still...

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

Hi all. Thanks for all the replies. Yes, that wall of porcelain in the pan inlet means the water has to flow up higher to flush the toilet. Perhaps it means the pan is lower profile than normal or something. I don't know. But it flushes just fine so it does seem to be by design. My photo shows...

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

Thanks again. I'll clean out the pan hole and try that idea.

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

You're right - I need to take the pipe and cone out and have another look with my endoscope. The cistern has a bit of light limescale but nothing that would block the flush pipe. I have a funny feeling the pan was just designed this way. Given that even the new seal is leaking I guess the pan...

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

Sending photos of my toilet parts to strangers on the Internet on a Friday night. Are you lot the ones my mummy warned me about? ;-) Anyway... PXL_20201002_205601306 by SiliconS posted 2 Oct 2020 at 10:05 PM Looking down into the flush pipe: PXL_20201002_205630425 by SiliconS posted 2 Oct...

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

There's enough flex in the pan seal (flush cone?) that I can tip the pipe up and down quite a bit. Even with the open end high the water doesn't run out of the pipe into the pan.

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

Thanks. No, I didn't insert anything into the pan to stop the leak or absorb the water before I put the new seal and pipe in. The loo has been dismantled for about a week while I got round to this job with the new seal so it had chance to dry out. Yes, it's a normal right-angle flush pipe. If I...

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure the pipe isn't in too far; I'm not even sure it's in far enough! The water level in the pipe is perhaps 2cm below the level of the pan rim, and steady at that level.

Toilet flush pipe stays full of water

Hi all. I'm trying to fix an issue that started as a leak between the toilet pan and the flush pipe but has now become confusing. Standard floor mounted toilet pan. Small hidden dual flush cistern within the built in cupboard behind the pan. I've replaced the pan/pipe seal and stuffed the pipe...

Steel/acrylic canopy over back door - advice / thoughts?

I want to install a canopy over our back door, which is quite exposed in wet weather. I've found some nice-looking ones made by a German company called Polymer. The range is called LightLine. I can buy online and the cheapest price I've found is £350 delivered for a 1500x950 canopy: I...

Gas fire - should gas feed pipe run through a tube?

Sadly my wife had other plans for me, bengasman. Nice idea though. :) Thanks namsag for your input. If you're right I hope the RGI will tell me I can channel out the wall and drill the hole into the chimney void ready for him and just leave him to feed the (wrapped) pipe through and connect...
