    Ceiling Joists / ledger board

Thanks Tony - Does your calculation mean I'll be using 1 screw every 400mm on the ledger board?

    Ceiling Joists / ledger board

Creating an independent ceiling with 6x2 joists spaced at 400 centres. I will be attaching a ledger board to the wall so I can use joist hangers. Do I use the 6 x 2 joists I will be using as a ledger board, or use a different timber? Also what size and length coach bolts do I use?

    PLANNING NEW SOIL PIPE

Thank you. OK, I will end up having about a 3m run of soil pipe from the toilet to the outside wall on the ground floor. In respect of the 40mm and 32mm waste, can I simply boss into the horizontal (fall of 18mm per meter) 110mm soil pipe?

    PLANNING NEW SOIL PIPE

Thank you. OK - so I'd have to take an accurate look at the depth of the underground pipework to establish whether I could even go horizontally through the wall from the downstairs toilet into the stack, and still retain the 450mm using a 200mm radius bend? Also, I notice that the...

    PLANNING NEW SOIL PIPE

I am currently refurbishing a ground floor and first floor flat and have the oppoortunity/misfortune of having to create a new soil stack. The current set up means I have to remove the existing soil stack, but I can use the existing drain, but the pipes are only about a foot below ground level...

My Roofing Project - NOVICE ALERT

Thanks everyone - I've now completed the job (almost - just need to do the ridge tiles) - the bonding gutter looks much betteer than I thought - I understand it would be better to tie in the slates, but as mentioned the battens were different sizes, and the old headlap was about 75. I ended up...

My Roofing Project - NOVICE ALERT

Thanks Shane Just received the bonding gutter - it's about 325mm wide, yielding abnout 150 either side. My slates are 600 x 300, and my half slates will be 150. I see you used half slates rather than slate and half in the run up to the gutter - how did you fix the half slates, as they...

My Roofing Project - NOVICE ALERT

Thanks Shane. If you could advise me on the following, that WOULD be most appreciated. 1. I see your slates rise a bit towards the gutter - that's because the gutter sits proud of the battens? 2. No mortar needed between gutter and slates? 3. What make of bonding gutter did you use...

My Roofing Project - NOVICE ALERT

Thank you. I have now stripped the slates to the neighbouring property, and you mentioned using a bonding gutter, and I have a couple of questions. I've been looking at the GRP bonding gutter. http://www.summitroofingsolutions.co.uk/slate-roof-case-study-redruth-1/ The gutter is nailed...

My Roofing Project - NOVICE ALERT

OK - thanks - so also get the thin pieces of wood and run those up the rafters too after I have removed the rotton ones? Are those there for ventilation?

My Roofing Project - NOVICE ALERT

After thinking that I would fix a few tiles that looked liked they had slipped, I discovered that there was a lot of rotten slate and batten, and so, gulp, I plan to take the whole of one side of the roof slates off and relay with new ones. So here is the set up - the slates are 300 x 600...

    Is kitchen door necessary?

If it was the first floor, and there was a means to escape from the lounge and bedroom (via lounge) directly to the ground floor without passing the kitchen would that also be acceptable?

    Is kitchen door necessary?

Ok, here's the layout. I am also thinking about totally removing the studwork between the kitchen and hall, having an open plan-ish kitchen as you enter the flat, in which case, we'd enter the flat with a fire-rated self-closing door. Bathroom would have standard door. You'd then see...

    Blocking up my chimney!!

Ta. Does that mean put plastboard over the front and create an empty space behind and that's OK, or stuff it with insulation before blocking it off to prevent any void before putting the plasterboard over the front?

    Cable above ceiling

Thanks - cables would need to feed lights, switches and sockets ultimately. I suppose I am asking about this because last time I clipped everything to the joists but keeping them free would enable future people to remove them without taking down the ceiling at a later date if required. Do you...

    Blocking up my chimney!!

The chimney comes off from the wall, and is not ventilated at all, so just blocking it off would create a hollow void with no means of ventilation - BUT would it need to be ventilated, should I just block it off, or fill with insulation to avoid and air inside at all?

    Is kitchen door necessary?

I have seen flats with kitchen lounge in one room, and sometimes a kitchen leads off directly from a lounge into a separate kitchen area with no door. I have a flat with a long corridor, leading off the corridor is doors to bathroom kitchen and lounge. Does the kitchen need a door in this...
