I'm in the process of planning cutting and installing a new a side garage door, single skin, opening approx. 700mm wide For the lintel, I'm looking at l-shaped steel. To install this, do I just chase out the mortar above the proposed opening, slide the intel in place and make good with fresh...

Fill gaps in outdoor garage steps

Thank you for the replies - I ended up filling most of the gaps with some aeriated brick offcuts and other rubble. @Deluks Yes, I did put a slight fall away from the wall. @Ivor Windybottom I dug between 20-30cm for the footings and filled with compacted aggregate and a concrete base, so it...

Fill gaps in outdoor garage steps

I've build some garage steps, and I'm ready to lay the pavers. The risers will consist of two 300x450mm pavers, and the top will be 4 square pavers. As you can see in the photo, there are some small gaps between the aeriated concrete blocks (these sit on top breeze blocks) My question: Do these...

    Pouring concrete steps into garage

When I started digging this out yesterday, I was thinking the same thing. The soil is wetter than I thought and near the garage very soft, so pouring a ton of concrete on there feels like a bad idea. What depth footings would I need for a brick construction?

    Pouring concrete steps into garage

I want to build some poured concrete steps so I can have a rear entrance to the garage (entrance will be cut afterwards). You can see the site below. The height will be 850mm (patio height to DPC), width from back to patio 1600mm. 1, My plan is to level the site. The soil here is clay and very...

    Decking or patio? opinions sought

The tree stump has been there quite w while and is fairly rotten, so I'll have a poke around and see. Nice to have another option though. and yes, I'll reverse the slope whatever I do. We got some high external damp readings in that area on survey, and stripping back the stones and DPM that...

    Decking or patio? opinions sought

Useful to know. I've dug out and laid a patio before and didn't have any problems. The ground in the picture is very hard - I couldn't get a spade in more than an inch anywhere I tried to dig in, so I suspect I may be able to get away with a shallower base but I'll know more when I dig out the...

    Decking or patio? opinions sought

Yes, this is a good point I hadn't fully considered. For putting a patio down there how shallow could I get away with digging out? considering the location and lack of foot fall.

I assume this is so the (wooden) support posts don't rot at the base? If so, it's a good suggestions, thanks.

    Decking or patio? opinions sought

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I had considered this but the area will largely contain garden tools and the like that will mainly be used in summer, and other than that the area will get no traffic. I agree it's a negative, but it's not a major consideration.

    Decking or patio? opinions sought

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I had considered doing a bit of digging out to at least flatten the area (or ideally a slight run off towards the fence). The soil as it stands doesn't breach the bottom of the DPC (and the house is 40 years old with 1 previous owner, so I think if damp were an issue...

    Decking or patio? opinions sought

I’m looking for advice/opinions on how to make better use of a patch of land by the side of the house. This area is very shaded and was originally covered with a damp membrane covered with stones. There is a slight gradient towards the house, and when I had a survey done the surveyor did note...
