    Cracks and buldges

The house was renovated with external insulation at same time as roof replaced. So it's true two variables changed at once. Structural engineer explained that removing all clay tiles would have allowed significant expansion and then replacing concrete tiles would have resulted in different load...

    Cracks and buldges

Thank you. Do you think I should use mesh or paper tape over the cracks or is that only for use with a thicker skim coat?

    Cracks and buldges

Hello, seeking opinions...! Bought this old house last year. Immediately had roof redone and lots of cracks appeared /reopened in paster throughout house. Have accepted cause was rapid change in load from tiles going off and on. But paranoid it something more. Like moving walls! Walls are also...

    Loft humidity in Victorian house

Similar figures. We have breathable membrane, ridge vent, lap vents but no soffit vent.. some daylight visible between chunky pantiles but will prob close up with moss over time...I don't see condensation but I'm concerned it's not ventilated at eaves. Not easy to do as they are over clad.

    Cracks in ceiling

You mean check it's not asbestos? That's the ~£100 testing kit I suppose? The leak was only when the crack opened , when roofers redid roof and hammered the battons off so hard the ceilings split! And then it hailed.

    Cracks in ceiling

Thanks. Agree, I prob could do a second fill and sand. I've not used artex but I think so... It's hard and like a bit plasticy like old gloss paint. And has random texture. I've also not used textured paint before - is that a modern alternative? Not seeing these stand out in the DIY store....

    Cracks in ceiling

What's the easiest way to makes these cracks look less awful, before one days getting a new ceiling or skim coat ? The cracks bulge out.i did a patch repair; opened with knife, filled with deep gap and toupret filler as required, sanded down and painted.... And it left a smooth recess, equally...

What BTU is this old radiator?

Thanks that's good to know. So its 50% oversized for bedroom but 50% undersized for the lounge and kitchen diner. Hard to believe a smaller rad in beds is what the BTU calc is recommending but then weve always kept the valve at 2-3 in bed and 5 in lounge. Central heating is confusing!

What BTU is this old radiator?

Anyone know how I can tell what BTU these old radiators are? Theres one in every room, all the same so clearly not designed to be fit for each room.... 136cm wide. 60 cm tall. ..Look like some old standard type?? Want to know BTU for comparison purposes with new ones...

    Sheffield bike stands in postcrete

Just an update for anyone who had replied and may be interested... I yanked the metal stand out and the edges of the holes were hard but there was a couple mm space and for the wobble. Rather than dig out and redo, or have to source a concrete mixer, I squirted half a tube of resin into the...

    Sheffield bike stands in postcrete

Cheers. All noted. I was hoping I could get some resin squeezed into make it all solid but seems its a dig out and re-do job.

    Sheffield bike stands in postcrete

The surround ground was clay earth so bolting on wasn't an option... its not a crack , just a gap in stone covering an old membrane. The postcrete is set in soil and those 'kerbs' are just set there to retain stones a bit. Sounds like you both expected postcrete to be absolt solid and using...

    Sheffield bike stands in postcrete

I've used postcrete to embed the bottom 20-30cm of my Sheffield bike stand. It hardened up nicely. A week later though and, the stand had a wobble and a hard tug willslide the post up a little from its base. Incidentally the posts have no flange at the bottom and so I thing I could prob slide...

    Timber cill on masonry (internal)

Maybe.... It was just that the uneven base surface made me think I needed something that I could spread quite thick across the whole of the base, to ensure lots of contact points, to avoid wobbles....

    Timber cill on masonry (internal)

Hi all.. I want to fix a new hardwood cill to masonry base of patio doors. Don't want to screw holes in the nice plank.is a bed of mortar going to be ok? Any other advice?

Patio door sill over air brick/duct

Hello clever people, We've just moved in this year. Our patio door looks to have been installed on a concrete slab that bridged the cavity wall below. Rear FFL is higher than garden and so a small patio exists. On the face of patio retaining wall, ~2m out from house is an air brick. But...

Patio Door internal threshold (and blocked air vent)

Hello clever people. In the old 1929 house we've moved into, previous owner had had new patio door installed. However, theres an ugly gap between the floor boards and the concrete slab it's sat upon. What's best proper option for covering it all up (they had just used a mat) and what do I need...

New fridge with a suitable optimum ambient temperature range

Interesting. I'd never heard of /imagined this constraint on a fridge. And now you mention it, our fridge began making a terribly loud hum after moving to a new (old) house this winter. It would stop with a thump but return shortly...but then it suddenly stopped making the nose altogether just...

Purlin (9x3inch) with 6m clear span

Thanks! The SE has been back and discussed the issues. Interestingly his verdict is that a steel L plate of only a couple of m length, bolted to midspan of each Purlin will be satisfactory. No need to strut it as it's so low anyway that the benefit would be minimal, and always best to keep load...

Purlin (9x3inch) with 6m clear span

Thanks For this. Any photo? Yes there is a parallel solid partition wall running +half width of house, at midpoint between each Purlin. Centre of attic floor is currently boarded over for storage so I can't see the top of that wall, but guess that's something that a pair of struts could land...
