Replaced seals on uPVC window and tightened all screws but still not sealing

Windows are 30 years old and they need replaced but was hoping to drag them out for longer. The windows closed really tight but some parts still have gaps when doing the card test. My only thinking is that the frames are warped and beyond repair?

Air vent valve added to gravity fed heating system - not sure why

I had a power flush and some zones added to my gravity fed CH system - I later discovered they had disconnected the vent pipe and added the below valve, any idea why? I’ve had to bleed the radiators a few times since they left. I also need to replace a faulty TRV and was planning to just bung...

    Broken window ledge - DIYable?

Access is a pain but can be done with ladders - I’m not sure if it’s worth replacing the whole sill with concrete or uPVC or repairing it - if it was repairable what would be the best way? You can’t see it in the photo but where it broke off there is a piece of rusted rebar.

Replace MDPE to copper reducer or leave?

I’m re-routing my mains input and stop cock soon and want to know should I renew the existing fitting that’s connecting the MDPE to the copper pipe or replace that as well? It’s not leaking and is about 30 years old. Not sure it’s worth it, and I should just cut the copper pipe and solder in a...

    Moving stopcock

Hi, I've attached a diagram of my current set up along with photos. I want to move my stop cock to under my utility room sink - it currently sits behind my washing machine which is difficult for me to move and impossible for my wife, should we need to isolate the supply in an emergency. It...

    Gaps above windows

Discovered upon inspecting the windows outside that 2 small windows have big gaps at the top. I was thinking of just using some sealant/adhesive to attach a piece of quadrant to but not sure if this would look naff?

Best way to secure sink top

This bathroom sink top sits on a cupboard but it’s not secure against the tiles and wall. What would you suggest securing it? I was going to shove a load of Tec 7 in behind it and apply a bead along by the tiles - not sure if this would work?

    Another post about attic condensation

I upgraded our insulation in our roof from 100mm to about 400mm - I have these plastic things at the eaves that I assumed were to allow airflow and put the insulation up to these. After the first cold spell I noticed it was soaking up there - condensation everywhere so I pulled back the...

    Planning for replacement conservatory

The rough weather we’ve just had has emphasised how leaky our existing c. 3.5 by 3.5 Victorian style conservatory is. It’s 30 years old now. I’m thinking in a couple of years we’d like to replace it with triple glazing and a better insulated ‘tile styled’ roof. I believe the base is solid -...

    Quote for roof work

Based in Northern Ireland. Got a quote for a dry verge system and all new fascia boards on a 4 bedroom 3 reception house. That’s including VAT and will take 2-3 days. This also includes overall roof inspection and other some remedial works. £3650. I appreciate this is a DIY forum and I have...

    Leaking waste pipe under toilet

I discovered a leak from what I think is the waste pipe under this stupidly fancy toilet in our guest WC that appears to have been put together by a tradie who forgot their specs. Whenever the flush is activated a small stream of water forms next to the flexi waste pipe here: Here are some...

Thermal imaging camera to detect cold spots in the home

I’d like to find out cold spots in my new house and I’ve read thermal cameras are good for detecting these. The issue I have is there are so many on the market I don’t know which would be good for this task alone without spending a small fortune. FLIR seem to be the top in the industry and do...

Any point in upgrading glass in existing window frames?

My windows are 30 years old and the frames are in decent condition. The glass planes just have air in the gaps rather than argon. Is thee any point in me DIYing putting in modern panes of glass to increase heat retention or is it a waste of time and money? I’m currently looking to replace...

Oil boiler not heating hot water but most radiators are fine

This is partly a DIY question in that I’d like to try and pinpoint the issue before reaching out to a professional. We have an old open vented oil heating system, with 2 tanks in the loft. There’s no thermostat and you can’t heat the water in the hot water tank without also having the central...
