    Solid Beech worktop

Hello I am looking for a butchers block solid beech type worktop standard width and length and 27mm thick or thereabouts. Problem I have is that I need to find such a worktop with 22mm staves. I have been searching for some time and cannot seem to find any with staves this narrow. I am...

    Bi fold doors

We installed 14ft doors (6 doors) and we installed a hefty catnic lintel as spec'd by the structural engineer. The doors will need a lintel as the frame will not support the doors per se. And in any case what is going to support whatever is above the doors? Alternatively you could use a...

Probably best to speak to your BCO and see what they suggest.

    Planning an extension

That picture is the 'oversite' i.e. build up of the floor inside the new extension and doesnt really address what I thought you were talking about. If the ground where the floor of the new extension is going to be is at the same level as your existing floor then it will need to be dug out to...

    Planning an extension

Hi there Ive just built an extension and have the same issue. You will need a minimum of 150mm from dpc to ground level and there is no getting around that - and nor should you want to as your wall will end up getting damp otherwise. I will be diging the ground out to create a new...

    Tanking cost

You can buy a kit off eBay for £35-40 to do that. Kit comes with primer which goes on first, mesh for corners and joints and big tub of liquid rubber type stuff which you put on with a paint brush - easy diy.

    Combi losing pressure

So if water was leaking from the sealed CH side into DHW side and was not replaced via the filling loop, the pressure wouldn't go down? Got news for you, it did on mine. OP was asking for possible reasons for his pressure drop, I provided one that happened to me. But you obviously know better...

    Combi losing pressure

Several possible causes. I had this issue several years ago and tracked it down to the diverter valve - It was letting some of the CH water through the DHW side so pressure was dropping - resolved by changing the diverter valve.

    Builder threatening us

OP Whilst there are some good suggestions above re the police, sometimes you need to say the right things to them to get the desired response. From what you say, I would suggest you report malicious communications, threats of assault and threats of criminal damage. The texts are the...

Leaking auto air vent (was: leaking pressure valve)

Its not a pressure release valve, it simply lets air out of your CH system. If you close the tap below, it just means the air in the system wont get out and you can bleed the rads instead until you get a new AAV.

    Paint peeling off

Try putting PVA on the wall first, then the paint. The new plaster is sucking the moisture out of the paint making it crack. PVA can seal this.

    preparing pipes in concrete floor

I have just done this. I used plastic pipe and speedfit which go together quicker than copper. I used pipe in pipe i.e. slightly larger flexible pipe that the plastic 15/22mm goes through and buried that in the screed - bought mine from screwfix, quite cheap. Re the elbows etc - Google...

    Flat/pitched roof insulation queries

Celotex between the rafters is OK. Drilling holes to allow airflow will weaken the rafters - Im not an expert but this seems wrong to me. Perhaps someone will more knowledge can expand on that. Instead of foil backed pb, you can get get a moisture barrier which is like a thinner damp proof...

Protecting speedfit pipes burried in a wall

No 1 is the proper way to do it. Have you tried using expading foam? Good luck with that.

    Double extension- where to start?

As I said, I did my own pp drawings so don't know about those as such, but my building control drawings cost just under £500. The building regs drawings are just glorified pp drawings perhaps someone would do you pp drawings for your planning and when you have that add the building regs stuff...

    Double extension- where to start?

Yes, builders wont quote without some form of illustration of what you want. This is why I did my own initial drawings for planning. Ok took a total of 12 hours to do (not in one go, over several days). I also found because our house is timber framed, some chippies also wanted a structural...

planning permission granted now mrs changed her mind

Having been through the process myself and wanting to change agreed plans, the best people to ask is the planning dept of your LA. Tell them what you have been given permission for, what you want to change and ask them what they want you to do. It will either be minor amendment (doubtful...

    Double extension- where to start?

Hi In answer to your questions: Size is about 20 sqm down and about 40 sqm up. My best quess is that to have had the extension done turn key would have been approx 80k. With regards trade prices - I did open a trade account with Travis, but on looking around trying to source...
