    Large Loft - Conversion

Couple of things to add now finished- When I finished doing all the truss timbers and tightened all the coach bolts up, it was a good few weeks before it was boarded up. Just before I boarded up the roof I thought I'd check all the bolts for tightness. They were a bit loose! even though I had...

    Large Loft - Conversion

both were 10,620    409d x 176w. Getting each section up the first floor (carpeted) stairs was hard work, took three very strong chaps. (inc me :) ) didnt even mark the carpet. Had to use a mechanical winch to lift them thru the new stair well. Each end sits on...

    Large Loft - Conversion

£12k in all. Three radiators??? aha! All three rads are plumbed into the GCH but they are also plumbed into the Living room log burner with grundfos pump (50 metre of coiled microbore packed tightly to the back of fire). Each rad can be used/isoloated however you want. Works a treat. Main...

    Large Loft - Conversion

Excellent stairs, but very heavy when fitting! When first starting to climb them its a little weird as you need to always start with the right foot.. They are quite steep but decent handrails make them safer. And they take very little of the bedroom up.

Self Build & Subsequent Loft Conversion

As requested - posted in this section. This was my first self build five years back. http://our-pad.host-ed.net/ A five bed detatched. Being a bricklayer/builder I obviously made good savings on labour - I laid every brick and block. Mixed all sand n cement on my own. All ground works...

They came from a job/surplus cheap. Bit stronger is good and will also help protect the great big steels.

    Large Loft - Conversion

Floor board to ceiling is 2250 (88.5") The houses in our road are all different and all about 350-500k. It will probably put about £40k on the house, being a large additional 6th bedroom. I did think about dividing it & en suite etc but we have three bathrooms & two showers already. I'm...

    Large Loft - Conversion

I'm a builder/bricklayer. I'm the daft arse that built the house without doing the loft in the first place, with no load bearing walls upstairs! Unfortunately I only just had enough cash at the time to do things the cheap way. Here's a web page from when I built the house. Just a few words...

    Large Loft - Conversion

Hi Steve, sorry for the late reply. No, I used a winch just above the new stair well. There's no way in the world we would have got them up there otherwise. I hadn't started the new timbers in those photos. They will be above the steel beams under and each side of the trusses, carriage...

    Large Loft - Conversion

Well for any of you guys still here, I finally bit the bullet and went for it. Got an engineer friend to make the (extremely heavy!!) steel beams. They are sitting on steel bearer of 1500. Three velux's in so far and about half the woodwork. Thought I just post to let people know the...

    Large Loft - Conversion

Its probably the easiest and cheapest possibility. I'm just not sure everything is worth the aggro. I guess I was hoping someone here might know a miracle cure for the problem ! Seriously, I'm just exploring every avenue before a decision is made.. thanks again, Dean

    Large Loft - Conversion

Thanks Guys. This is the trouble. Such a shame really as it would make a very large room for us. It annoys me every time I go up there for something!

    Large Loft - Conversion

Hi. I have a new house (five years old) with a large loft. Its a massive space and I'd like to convert it. :D Internal walls measure 8,620 (wall plate to wall plate) x 10,350, gable to gable. Pitch is 35 degrees. There are no load bearing walls upstairs! :( (steel stud & plasterboard)...
