    Painting rendered stove recess

I've rendered a fireplace recess with a cement/lime/sand mix and it's now ready for painting. It will be used for a woodburning stove (5KW). Can I use emulsion/exterior emulsion for this or will the heat wreck it?

Brick fireplace - squaring the arch

OK, thanks for the advice. I'm going to keep the arch and render the brickwork. The strap (probably 3" x 3/8") will have to go straight across with mortar filled in above it - I'm not going to be able to bend the it into the arch.

Brick fireplace - squaring the arch

Erm... I can't get 8' x 4' in the car  I'd rather render and pay for it skimmed as that matches the rest of the house. I'm going to have to render the recess anyway, so being able to use metal bead saves me fiddling about with the edges (I think).

Brick fireplace - squaring the arch

Thanks for the reply. Would it be better to prop, knock out the arch and install a concrete lintel? I've removed the plaster/render from the chimney breast now as it was blown, so I've got a better view of the thing. Cheers.

Fitting skirting boards - glue rather than screw?

Comes off with about the same effort as for sound glue (or filled-in screws), but leaves a fairly flat surface behind for refixing. If you're pulling off skirting, you're gonna have to be prepared for a little patchwork later anyway

Fitting skirting boards - glue rather than screw?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread... I've just done all the skirting in an old brick build house - I used plasterboard adhesive for most of it. It sticks solid and fills big gaps where screws won't bite. If you find it comes away when it's dry, you have a good substrate for a few small...
