Holding the ignition lead close (few mm) to earth is done to check that the spark generator is working

Perhaps you could provide some constructive advice please.

My Valor gas fire failed to ignite so I 1. replaced the battery 2. checked the the connections on the three wires 3. replaced the electronic spark generator (nearly £50!!) 4. tried holding the ignition wire next to earth Still no spark??? Any suggestions would be much appreciated
