ok, so i removed the plastic knobs and used a spanner to close the valves (90 degrees left / ANTI-clockwise). No way I could have done them without the spanner, way too tight.

Hi SUNRAY - yes, the bedroom is also on a dimmer. I change the dimmer module on the right hand side, but perhaps that's not even the module causing the problem, and it's one of the other two? If relevant, when I connecting 3 wires into the same hole, the bedroom also worked fine!
