    Following on from Thermos comment, many local authorities now collect green waste for recycling, and very often you can buy the composted product back again - it is quite good value, and is excellent as a soil conditioner.

    Hedges

    If you can it would be good to create a hedge with a mix of evergreen & prickley plants that are native, as they will also contribute to the wildlife value. I would go for a mix of Hawthorn, Privet, holly and blackthorn.

    How do I find a good but cheap landscape gardener?

    there is a trade organisation, it is called BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries). they can be found at www.bali.org.uk and you can search for a local tradesman. They have people that will do all sizes of work from £10 up to £millions.
