Good question - the pump was quite old and corroded, and we were getting a lot of noise in the system, so it did need changing, but as you say, it couldn't have been the source of our immediate problem :(

Turns out it was the wiring to the thermostat - one of the wires had come loose.

I have a Baxi Solo 3 60 PF, and it has developed a problem that when the hot water is turned on, the boiler goes out and stays out. If I select just Central Heating on the control panel it works fine. But when Hot Water only, and Hot Water and Heating is selected, the boiler doesn't start...
