Thanks @flameport, those pins under the thermostatic valves are the bane of our lives!... we have to check them all every year. However, in this case it's definitely not the issue. Would be great to get it sorted, then look at replacing the Boilermate further down the line.

@ianmcd no, nothing designer... just a standard radiator. See pictures attached. The values were replaced around 2 years ago.

Thanks - that's what someone else said when I explained the problem, but he's not local. We have rubber/plastic pipes and they are not warm like other rooms, and the valve never gets hot either, which made us think it was the pump in the Boilermate - although thinking about it, the same pump...

Well, I went with the local engineer.... £137 for the fan plus £75 labour. To be fair he did ring me at 8am on the dot, and did go out of his way to get the part today as it wasn't in stock locally. Add the VAT and the bill came to £243. Would have been cheaper doing a fixed price...

Thanks to all who have replied - your responses have been very useful. I phoned British Gas who will do a fixed price repair for £187, and I'm waiting to hear back from the local engineer this morning. Will post back later... hopefully I won't be so cold !!
