    Problem sorted. Eventually traced to a blown cable on the shaver socket. Apparently the transformer in the shaver socket [ 240v to 115v ] was dragging down the voltage for the rest of the circuit. Shaver socket removed, no more problem. To be truthful, I did not even know the shaver...

    Thanks for the help folks - There are no dimmer switches on the ring at all - just conventional on/off type. I have now had all the switches off the walls and checked all for dodgy connections - none found. I have now replaced the standard filament type lamps with new low energy type...

    There are 3 rooms plus the hallway upstairs on the circuit, and the hallway downstairs as well as two external lights on the same MCB.
