    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

Well finally some good news! After your last comment I figure that there might be a blockage just below the pump. I took the pump off and pushed a cable (it was the only thing to hand) down the pipe. I found that the valve directly below the valve wasnt fully open. The tap was sticking, so i...

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

I was starting to think about a blockage. The bottom of the expansion tank wasnt looking too healthy. The house/system is 10yrs old. Perhaps I can try close off the valve in the airing cupboard, turn off the valve above the pump, remove the face of the pump and put the hose in whilst the...

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

Oh dear, here we go again  Filled for few minutes direct into the draincock above the boiler, then stuffed the hose down the pipe in the expansion tank. Bled all air from the radiators and fired up the pump. More air bled from the auto bleed valve so I fired up the boiler on HW. Fine...

Yes, tried on both hw & ch, and on their own. In fact I have drained the system a few times and got the same fault, so perhaps your right about the pump. Off to try again shortly.

yes, they are all open now. The three I shut are the red handled gate valves in the airing cupboard. Two I assume are the vertical feeds from the tanks above. The third is on the bottom of the water tank.

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

Well I have so far tried the hose down the expansion tank pipe and hose connected to the valve above the boiler (leaked all over the place!) - unfortunately still the same :-( So... if I can skip off work early i'll drain the system again and refil from the expansion tank with a hose down the...

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

Ok. Sounds like a plan. I assume any air will escape thru the auto bleed valve?

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

Ah, simple. Just need to hold the hose and turn it on in the garden... hmmm... two people needed I think! I can see that easily ending in tears! I'll have to get a mate round.

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

Sounds like the fill from the draincock is the easiest option. I did try before, but the water didnt seem to want to go in... or maybe i was just too nervous when the water started dripping too near the electrics of the boiler! If I go with the other method of "you can put it down the tank...

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

Latest update! The bleed valve above the boiler now has a fast run of water, before it was just a trickle, now its clear that you could fill up the sink in minutes. I assume thats good news! I checked the topup tank in the loft again and it was filling up again after the drain last night...

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

So should the water flow quickly out that draincock valve? Also, if i have to try the hose pipe method... how is that done? Thank you for your time, hopefully I can get this sorted finally!

I would tend to agree... its just how to get the air out. Any ideas?

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

The boiler is across from the airing cupboard, so the pipes must run horizontal for 15ft(ish). I took each side of the valve off seperately, there was plenty of water coming out. Incidently, when I took the face of the pump off then refitted and turned back on the valves the air bled...

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

As the heating system is switched off, the boiler is cold and the pipes are also cold. I opted to pull apart both the horizontal pipes to try and make sure no air is in the valve. Fired up the system on hot water only and the boiler lasted amount 1 min then mad loads of banging and shut down. I...

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

If I connect a hose to that draincock, i get a slow trickle. Fills up a mug in about 1 or 2mins. The water is red hot. Should it run out faster? I do have another one next to the hot water tank. Neither let any water out at any speed... The heat transfers about 8" up and down the pipe, so...

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

I tried the speed change, figured 3 would be better than 2, but still no joy. The pipes either side of the pump do get hot, but the pump is also hot. Not sure if thats just the heat of the pump transferring up/down (the pipe) Just about to link to a pic which may help.

    Potterton Boiler/Heating Issues

I did check the pump (its a Myson) but unscrewing the black centre cap and got a regular drip. I also took the front of the pump off this evening and briefly put power to it, so the impellor is spinning ok.
