    Opening out fireplace

Thanks for the reply. To answer some of your questions: - Only one of the fireplaces on the ground floor is a working one (gas). The flue for that chimney runs side by side (to the left) of the flue for the equivalent first floor fireplace - We had all the chimneys swept a couple of days ago...

    Opening out fireplace

Hello, I have a few queries around opening up our fireplace that I was hoping to get some feedback on. We live in a Victorian/Edwardian terraced house and I want to open up the fireplaces on the first floor to create some shelving/storage space in the kids rooms. Currently the openings seem...

Mains 240v cable to 12v microphone

It would be as the floorboard access is near the front of the room (i.e. closest to the external wall where the porch roof is attached to) and its just got carpet on top - easy enough to pull back if required

Mains 240v cable to 12v microphone

    3. It supports it as far as I am aware (have also looked on other forums). It supports LineIn and MicIn. -- Is another option to T off the mains cable; One part goes to the PIR/lighting and the other is just wired to a normal socket, which I can plug in a 12v adapter like this. This socket...

Mains 240v cable to 12v microphone

Thanks for all the info. So I guess there are a few options: See if there is a PoE splitter which can do simultaneous PoE and 12v split power Use a converter like this to bring the voltage down and wire the microphone straight into this Use a passive microphone which doesn't need dedicated...

Mains 240v cable to 12v microphone

I'm not quite sure what that means, sorry. I have another camera which has the ethernet cable plugged straight into it and the other end goes to the PoE switch. Probably I have misunderstood?

Mains 240v cable to 12v microphone

Ah, I thought that just related to the optional power cable if you wanted to power the camera via a dedicated power supply :) I can't see an entry / mid-range one with these in built and have read that they are not that good anyway for external cameras. The camera I am getting is this one. It...

Mains 240v cable to 12v microphone

I'm not 100% sure, this is from the manual - 5W, but not sure about voltage. Does that help?

Mains 240v cable to 12v microphone

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately everything was laid a while back in anticipation of what I was going to do in the porch, and now the inside has all been finished. I only though about the microphone recently but its more of a bit of fun than a real need. I thought as I already have a mains...

Mains 240v cable to 12v microphone

Hi, I have a mains cable coming into the ceiling of my porch/entrance. This will hook up to a PIR which will in turn power a couple of lights either side of the entrance. Separate to this I will have an IP camera, running of PoE, for which I already have an ethernet cable laid. I was looking...

Diplomat Hob - Burner Body Question

Hi there, My wife recently tried to clean the hob burner bodies using the Oven Pride liquid. Looks like the stuff was too strong and has eaten away a lot of the top layer / coating of the burner bodies. Do you know if they are still safe to use? I tried using one of them but the flames...

    Flickering living room lights

Ok - so I think it is fixed now - but had nothing to do with the dimmer switches themselves - it was my silly fault! When I replaced the light fixture I only put in 1 out of the possible 5 halogen bulbs (20W), to test whether or not I would still have the flickering problem. Little did I know...

    Flickering living room lights

Thanks both, I'll give switching the dimmers for normal switches a go and see if that does the trick. Out of curiosity, I have some dimmers that work (i.e. they dim the lights) and some that don't dim the lights - even though the actual dimmer units at the back of the switches are...

    Flickering living room lights

Hi vibrobullit407, I've checked the connections at the switches and they seem to be fine. I put in a new light fixture - so the connections there are also solid. Is there anywhere else there could be loose connections? Hi RMS, Yes, there are two switches controlling the living room...

    Flickering living room lights

Hi there, I can no longer use my living room lights as each time I turn them on they flicker. No other lights on the same loop have this problem; just the ceiling light in the living room. I replace the light fixture, which didn't do the trick. I checked the wiring at each switch (2-way...

Wiring a wardrobe light in old airing cupboard

Ah right, my bad. Sorry, I got the terminology mixed up. I was referring to the difference between a twin+earth and a 2core Twin+E: 2-core: This is what I would run from the junction box to the push switch. Or is my thinking wrong? :)

Wiring a wardrobe light in old airing cupboard

[/url] Thanks for the suggestion. It is a little bit pricey and probably overkill for my situation... however it does look cool :)

Wiring a wardrobe light in old airing cupboard

Perhaps you misunderstood my question, or I have misunderstood your reply. I was refering to a scenario where instead of using a 2core cable you use a 3core and do not use the earth at all. So, lets take my situation - One would normally use a 2 core from the junction box to the push switch...

Wiring a wardrobe light in old airing cupboard

Ok cool. BTW - Out of curiosity, is it bad practice to use a 3 core cable instead of a 2 core one and not use the earth wire. I.e. cut the earth wire back to the sleeving on both sides of the cable, and effectively only use the Live and Neutral cables?

Wiring a wardrobe light in old airing cupboard

Ah ok, so it still has to be encased even if it's going into the wall casing?
