Joist hangers with lime mortar and old bricks

Thanks for the tip. This seems much simpler and cleaner than the grinder. I'll give it a go. Cheers.

Insulated most of ground floor, how to do awkward bits?

They get damp not wet. Is that ok? Or were you referring to any moisture? There's no DPC and there is a concrete patio outside (27in below ground floor level inside) where water pools against the wall; which needs a sledgehammer taking to it (the patio). Another job :(

Insulated most of ground floor, how to do awkward bits?

Thanks for the reply. I did contemplate that, but thought it sounded so much better to fill those irregular gaps with foam. Until I tried it :( I suppose a foam gun would have the same problem, due to the can being upside down, on the top of the gun? I need a flexible ~1m nozzle to allow the...

Thanks for the link. So a scutch holding chisel is what is required to remove portions of brick?

Insulated most of ground floor, how to do awkward bits?

Hi, Insulated under ground floor in 1890 house, from crawl space, by putting space blanket between all joists. Now the awkward bits; the small gaps between wall and joist (4-6cm) and also the joist structure around fireplace. I saw a suggestion here to fill the gap between wall and joist with...

Joist hangers with lime mortar and old bricks

I've been using sharp sand and NHL 3.5 3:1. Ok. A few tips from the pros, if I may? What's the best way to cut slate to fit the holes? Angle grinder? It seems to break pretty randomly otherwise. In one joist hole there is a join between two bricks at the bottom. One brick is a couple of mm...

Joist hangers with lime mortar and old bricks

Still considering both options. Easy hotrod :) What concerns me here, is that if the position for the slot is near the edge of a brick then it's almost impossible to drill right at brick edge. Drill will keep slipping. Also, these old bricks have a tendency to break if knocked about.

Why are both frost stat and pipe stat needed?

Terminal 4 provides a circuit when the room is over temp, it's a 2 way switch i.e. the opposite to terminal 3. Junction block it is.

Why are both frost stat and pipe stat needed?

Yes. Forgot to mention. Only the terminal number 4 is shown on the diagrams, though my frost stat also has a screw and clamp on T4 too. Thanks very much for your prompt and helpful response. As usual Mr Hailsham :)

Why are both frost stat and pipe stat needed?

Ok. I have a T4360A1009 frost stat and an L641B1004 low limit pipe stat. It would be simpler to wire if I could run a dual core to the frost stat and then a dual core from the frost stat to the pipe stat. The frost stat has an extra terminal 4 in there which is not mentioned in any literature...

Joist hangers with lime mortar and old bricks

Tis' nowt, but a healthy exchange of ideas :) Indeed. I still have that in mind. The old joist is out now. The holes are huge. One is 3 brick courses high, which was hidden behind the skirting. Not mortared in at all. Even pre-rot that joist end was only inserted about an inch into the...

Joist hangers with lime mortar and old bricks

Seems like a 9" angle grinder is going to be needed to make slots for the hangers? Mine's a 4.5" grinder so not going to make big enough slots? Is there another way to do it? Otherwise the hangers are a non starter. Back to slotting in the joist.

Why are both frost stat and pipe stat needed?

Thanks guys. Just having a further think about this. Isn't the combination of stats so that when the criteria are met, that the boiler turns on for a reasonable burn time, enabling the heat to reach the far flung corners of the system? With just a pipe stat, the boiler may only fire for a short...

Joist hangers with lime mortar and old bricks

Thanks woody. Which type of hanger? Would the multi truss type; http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p96448 bolted onto the wall, be a stronger fixing than the normal hanger which gets mortared in? Or are multi truss hangers for something entirely different? I suppose I could prop those...

Why are both frost stat and pipe stat needed?

Hi, Rather than fiddling with the timer during a freezing period, to make the heating come on every 30mins for 10 mins or the like, I'd like our old WB240RSF boiler to protect itself. I see both frost stat and pipe stat are recommended. Why not just a pipe stat? After all you want to protect...

Best way to deal with damp wall under Victorian sash

A little more prodding with a screwdriver, reveals this: Those big chunks simply came away in my hand. The missing mortar around the bricks in the middle was not scraped out by me. There was just nothing there behind the sand/brick-bit/dust combination which was filling the void...
