    How do you measure coving?

    Thanks. :)

    How do you measure coving?

Wickes/B&Q/Homebase say they do 90mm, 100mm and 127mm width coving. How do I measure my existing coving to see which size matches? Is it the diagonal, or one of the flat faces?

Can you use multi-finish on top of Gyproc Soundcoat Plus?

Appreciate your advice on damp Primer, but my question was about whether Soundcoat would reduce any noise when used as described above. I've already weighed up the damp risks.

Can you use multi-finish on top of Gyproc Soundcoat Plus?

The wall's been wallpapered for at least the past 20 years, so it's not breathed in all that time with no damp issues.

Can you use multi-finish on top of Gyproc Soundcoat Plus?

I know Gyproc Soundcoat Plus isn't meant to be finished, it's meant to be left rough and used on the bricks behind drywalls, but can you use multi-finish straight on top of Soundcoat? Would it still offer any soundproofing? I've got a really shoddily built victorian brick party wall, and no...

Insulating external section of a stud wall

Yes, I'm guilty of that as have no tumble dryer or space for one. So would I be better to use and insulating material that also allows moisture to pass through it? Eg, I've found Thermafleece, made of wool, which claims to be 'breathable'...

Plastering advice - 4 walls, all different, plus ceiling

Hang on - I just realised, on this party wall I've no idea what my idiot neighbour has got on her side. If she's had her side replastered or skimmed with modern stuff, is me forking out for lime a waste of time/money? Also, a question about the other party wall with the chimney breast - if...

Plastering advice - 4 walls, all different, plus ceiling

IKWYM about imperfections suiting a period property, and normally I'd agree, but once through the door there's nothing left in my place to know you're in an old house. With no original features to contextualise the imperfections, a finish with 'quirks' just ends up looking like poor...

Insulating external section of a stud wall

Will the condensation then not just form on the plasterboard?

Plastering advice - 4 walls, all different, plus ceiling

@peaps - how long do you need to leave between the 10-12mm applications to build up the plaster? Wish I was in Derbyshire, but sadly 100+ miles south. I guess your listing question was for Possel? Mine's more sooner to be condemned. :D

Insulating external section of a stud wall

Is that the stuff you use in lofts? I've got a few unused rolls sitting in the loft from the previous owner.

Plastering advice - 4 walls, all different, plus ceiling

lol... yes, I realise now that the wood is the structure in that wall. It kinda freaks me out, I've lived in loads of victorian terraced houses, but never one like this! So is lime plaster/plastering more expensive/more expensive to get done than modern stuff? Can you get as smooth a...

Insulating external section of a stud wall

Yes. Seriously! At first I couldn't work out why there were bricks in the cavity. I started pulling them out (a lot were loose) but luckily got distracted before trying to smash the rest out. Then, when later doing some measuring up in the hall (the other side of the main section of the stud...

Plastering advice - 4 walls, all different, plus ceiling

What's the minimum width of battening I could get away with? There's architrave around the window frame, plus the sill, that in places is barely a centimeter proud of the existing plaster. It'd mean I'd have to go down to 22mm thermaline, and even that I'm guessing would be pushing it in...

Plastering advice - 4 walls, all different, plus ceiling

The partitioned staircase wall goes below the floorboards and sits on the base soil, is that what you meant 1john? Would using metal lath over the timber in the way you've described using the plasterboard strips work as well? As I mentioned in my later post, I'm getting a DPC put in on the...

Insulating external section of a stud wall

I've taken down one side of a stud partition in the lounge of my victorian terraced house. The partition was empty, as I expected, apart from one section that had half a brick wall built within it, sitting directly on top of the floorboards. I realised that the other side of this...

Plastering advice - 4 walls, all different, plus ceiling

Suspended timber. Approx 8-10" gap under the floorboards, soil base. Regarding replacing the lime plaster with more lime plaster, is that necessary? I'm not precious about the victorian-ness - the house has not one original feature left in it (apart from maybe all the plaster that I just...

    Plaster in HDMI Cable

If it does end up degrading later on, this guy found a place that did new HDMI plugs you can re-solder on if you strip the cable back a biy (he posts the solution at the end of his first post)...

Plastering advice - 4 walls, all different, plus ceiling

No one got any sound advice?? :o Here's a couple more questions. On this exterior wall it needs a damp course, so all the existing sand and cement plaster is coming off. I'm looking into dot & dabbing Thermaline straight onto the bare brick afterwards for the whole wall and bay. Is it...
