    alternative to spindles?

You don't say how old the flat is - what architectural style. But, how about a sunray design - like on 1930' radio sets. I think you can buy them ready made for decking banisters, so you would need three. Or you could have the"sun" at the bottom corner, and the rays going up the stairs...

    Replacement staircase spindles

I've just zoomed in on the photo and can see the problem. If you do not have woodworking machiery (not power tools), you will need to get these made. A company which makes wooden window frames could do it.

By rectangular, do you mean not turned, i.e. with four square edges? If so, why not buy planed timber of the correct size and cut it to length?

By the way, woodworm killer should dry overnight. I use Solignum, but any reputable make will do. You have to sand down to the wood - none of this "light sanding" lark, you need to get all the old varnish/dust/filth off. What's with the Danish oil? Has somebody got shares in the Danish...

    Desk Restoration

Don't worry too much about getting the mould off - that will go when you get sanding. Water will raise the grain, which you don't want. Sanding - go "through the papers" - start with 80 grit, then 120, and finish off with 150 or 180 grit. Use a sanding block or a small piece of wood to keep...

    Renault megane starting problem

I've just read this thread and tried the recommended solution on my Megane which wouldn't start when hot. I can say that cleaning the TDC sensor is like magic: Took me longer to get the tools out than to fix. The result is amazing, starts first go hot or cold, and I'm sure it runs better...
