Thermal store and condensing boiler: maximising condensing

I have a Gledhill Torrent ‘solar’ thermal store heated by a solar thermal collector and a conventional heat-only boiler. The boiler has become very unreliable recently, so I will have to replace it with a condensing boiler. I would like to ensure that I am using this as efficiently as possible...

Hi Juup Thanks for your reply. I really just wanted to reassure myself that my conclusion (almost a year ago) that a Coldstream accumulator is the way forward for me was the right one, and wanted to check that you were happy with your decision, which you obviously are. I think I understand how...

Cold water accumulator/potable water expansion vessel

Hi Juup The GAH website has a FAQ on installing the Coldstream outside: Q.Can the accumulators be installed outside, in a open garage or shed? A.Yes, the C2 range is ideal and designed with this in mind, remember no power supply, or drainage requirements so they can go almost anywhere...

Cold water accumulator/potable water expansion vessel

Thank you everyone for their comments, and to Juup in particular for a very detailed account of their experience. I am now thinking about a larger Mainsboost/Coldstream, but finding somewhere to put it is the main problem. I have converted the former semi-integral garage into living...

Cold water accumulator/potable water expansion vessel

I had thought that 100 litres would give me the bare minimum of what I need, which is in the morning when two people are having a shower at the same time with a 5 minute overlap. At 7/8 litres/minute per shower (eco shower heads), that is a total of 70/80 litres. Before and after this overlap...

Cold water accumulator/potable water expansion vessel

I have a mains pressure system with Gledhill Torrent thermal store. I have good pressure and flow (static 5 bar; dynamic 1 bar 25 l/min) to enable a good shower, but I have recently installed an en-suite, so now have two showers. Shower flow rate drops if two showers are operating, washing...

Upgrading pipe between stopcock and thermal store

I realise that the 15mm diameter of the pipes is a limiting factor. However, I also understand that there is an issue of flow resistance in the pipes and particularly at bends. There are at least four 90 degree bends in the 15mm pipe going from the stopcock to the thermal store. I was hoping...

Upgrading pipe between stopcock and thermal store

Thanks for the advice. Do I need to replace the 15mm mains stopcock with a 22mm one? As the internal diameter of the alkathene supply pipe will be about the same as that of a 15mm copper pipe, I cannot see the point, but perhaps I have missed something.

Upgrading pipe between stopcock and thermal store

I have had a Gledhill Torrent thermal store installed, providing hot and cold at mains pressure at all outlets. My incoming supply is a black alkathene pipe, installed in the 1960s when the house was built. From there, a 15mm pipe runs to the thermal store, with a branch to the kitchen cold tap...
