From Mews muse: Council would not pay compensation, so asked for a refund of my building notice fee instead. It took a while to get them to agree to any refund but in the end have agreed to refund half the BN fee.

    Responsibility of Building Control Ollicers

I promised Freddie that I would let him know when and if the Council did offer anything in settlement towards my roofing disaster. It took a while and quite a lot of research on my part into Building Regs. As they were not prepared to pay compensation, I asked for a refund of my Building Notice...

Will do! I have already said to BC that if a cheque for £25 arrives, I will not take that sitting down!

    Responsibility of Building Control Ollicers

Last word on all this. Design for roof was by architect who did the plans for planning. The tiles match those on other roof areas of the house. The Building Control Officer came round and had a look and said very little. His visit was followed by a letter pointing out that Bulding Notice did...

    Responsibility of Building Control Ollicers

Ok. I think the general concensus is that the builder is to blame as it was his roofer but I want to be sure that BC are aware that roofs are part of a build and it's more than somewhat important that they are constructed properly, along with foundations, drains, lintels etc etc. Surely it is...

    Responsibility of Building Control Ollicers

Thanks for your positive reply. I am waiting for a letter from the Head of Building Control with his decision as to whether the Council are liable to any extent, which I doubt. Where else would the buck stop except with the poor homeowner? I have bookmarked your link and the first example...

    Responsibility of Building Control Ollicers

I think a couple of v. experienced roofers have replied regarding my plight and I greatly appreciate their input. The repair roofer I have contacted thinks ALWITRA would be my best option, inserting additional batons to bring the roof up to the required height so that the lead need not be...

    Responsibility of Building Control Ollicers

No particular tile was specified. The tile used was chosen by the roofer who built the roof as a match to roofing tiles elsewhere on the house. The pitch was restricted by a window at the top. Yes, a wonder it didn't start leaking immediately and I wish it had as I wouldn't be in the position...

    Responsibility of Building Control Ollicers

Thanks for all your replies. Not encouraging. The tiles that were used were Marley Modern in smooth gray. The pitch specified should be 17.5 deg and 100mm headlap , and my roof is only 5.2 deg qnd 75mm headlap- almost as flat as a flat roof. I thought Building control inspectors were...

    Responsibility of Building Control Ollicers

I had a small extension with pitch roof completed approx 5 years ago. The Building Inspector was involved throughout and a completion certificate was given and all his stipulations adhered to. However, the roof is now like a sieve as the pitch of the roof is totally inadequate for the tiles...

    astragal plastic bars

The solution I thought had solved the problem was not long lasting. Super strong double sided sticky failed to hold even with mitre fix applied. I am going to try super glue as have had success with that when all else has failed, even used it to re-fit a car bumper where the clips had broken...

    astragal plastic bars

Thanks to both of you who replied to this problem. Finally cracked it. Thicker silicone didn't work as even with duct tape it slipped and popped off. Finally ended up cutting a small piece of double sided extra strength sticky tape which I applied to the glass over the metal strip between the...

    astragal plastic bars

This silicone was recommended for sticking plastic to glass and says cure time is 5 mins. The plastic bars have a thin black rubber strip on each side which stands prouder than the plastic which may be the prob, but I don't want to remove it. Taken all bars down again and will now really clean...

    astragal plastic bars

I'm not used to failure. Went off to Omnico and bought a silicone specially made to stick plastic to glass. It didn't. The air was blue. Tried masking tape to hold it in place until it cured, but that didn't help either. Do I have to stand there pressing it against the glass for 7 hours...

    astragal plastic bars

I'll give it a try and hope it solves the problem. From what you say you seem to have come across this very problem yourself so the solution is tried and tested. Many thanks.

    astragal plastic bars

I think they may be cut too long so will shorten them with a mini hack saw and try the silicone.

    astragal plastic bars

My UPVC windows have fitted plastic astragal bars. These are popping away from the glass despite clips at the side and double sided sticky tape. Can I glue them to the glass and if so what glue would do it. Someone has suggested MitreFix. Would that work? HELP!
