I'm pretty sure it is the overflow pipe, since there is no other plumbing nearby. I had not thought about a crack inside the cistern - I'll drain it and see if I can see anything. Thanks.

Upstairs toilet - overflow pipe goes out the side wall of the house - but really difficult to get to because of trees in the way. Months ago, we noticed a damp patch on the brick wall. Checked the cistern, which was trickling down the overflow pipe. Adjusted the float arm - problem solved...
