Why do 230v programmers have batteries?

But doesn't the 230v power do that?

Why do 230v programmers have batteries?

Yes, OK, those are good brands, but can you answer the question about why mains ones seem to have batteries?

Why do 230v programmers have batteries?

I am looking for a 230v, 7-day programmable thermostat. I have wired a 3-core-and-earth to where the thermostat will be, so want a mains voltage one, to prevent having to have batteries. Why then when I search for 230v programmers, do they say in the specs "battery powered?" Do they have...

    Insulation layer and stud wall

Yes, I'm venting the roof space. In fact, I had a disaster already when I fitted all the ceiling insulation, taped and sealed the joins, but somehow some air got up there from the bathroom, and on looking above I found the entire roof deck had gone mouldy underneath, so I took it all down again...

    Insulation layer and stud wall

I am building a stud wall to cut my bathroom in half. The room has a flat roof. Between the roof joists I am fitting 100mm deep of rigid foam insulation; beneath this 25mm deep continuous layer of foil-backed rigid foam insulation, with the joints foil-taped to act as an airtightness layer and...

Is it OK to hang an oak door in a softwood frame?

I'm thinking of getting this door from Wickes: http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/205897?w=205897 but I only have a softwood frame, not a hardwood one. Will it be strong enough?

A timber loft hatch to comply with Building Regs

Hi I am building an extension which is subject to all the usual Building Regs. It has a loft, so I need to put in a hatch, but the building has a very traditional, lime plaster/oak finish, and I hate the appearance of the plastic loft hatches that you can buy which are guaranteed to comply...

What type of hot water system to have?

Why on earth doesn't somebody make a boiler which does central heating in the same way as a combi, ie without the need for a cylinder, but without heating hot water also? Then you could size it appropriately for your central heating system, and not have this problem of cycling?

What type of hot water system to have?

Thanks Bernard for your views. Do you know of a good source for independent unbiased advice, apart from here of course? I did look into this before I installed my (8kw) woodburner, but it seems from my research that for that system to work you need an accumulator tank, you don't just run the...

What type of hot water system to have?

Hmmm! I see! Perhaps I will need to research this more thoroughly, and get an installer who understands the problem more competely! Thank you both very much for your input.

What type of hot water system to have?

Oh I see... So my total radiator requirement, which is indeed, as you say, just under 5kW, is too small for most combi boilers to function properly! But surely there must be many small flats which have similar heat requirements. Does nobody make a combi boiler for the smaller household?!

What type of hot water system to have?

No that can't be right flameport, I need much more heat than that. Thank you for taking the time to work all that out, but it doesn't seem right to my inexpert eye. Perhaps my BTU calculations are wrong. For example 11000 BTU needed in the kitchen/living room requires two double panel...

    Wiring question

Oh., you mean two-way-and-intermediate. OK, it's a bit weird having the feed to the switch and the switched live in separate cables, but if that's the way it is, then what I think you need to do is remove that loose red single core, get a new piece of flex or twin-and-earth, wire it into the...

That link doesn't work. When you say 3-way switch, what do you mean?

Old (old) house mortar is shot in many places, replace with?

Aha! Found how to do private messages. I've sent you details of alternative suppliers.

Old (old) house mortar is shot in many places, replace with?

Purple monkey, there are alternative suppliers, many. I can give you more details. Is there a way on this forum to send someone a private message, to avoid any more of joe's silliness?

    Shed Electrics

The answer to this question may not be a simple one. The wiring regs contain a number of different "reference methods" which describe ways in which cable can be installed, whether in trunking, clipped direct, behind insulation etc, and each of these has a different impact on the size of cable...
