ES and the Screwfix 38380 unbranded internal door latch failure warning - check yours!

@John D - the problem these days is even respected old UK brands can actually be the same Chinese junk inside. Came across an example a while ago with combination key safes where the identical laughably insecure combination mechanism is being sold by Master (not surprising in the slightest ;)...

Capped 15mm gas pipe stub, in a strange location

Separate gas powered freezer then? Either that or as @roguetrader says, a gas tumble dryer. Only other explanation is they simply put a point there because the pipes were going past anyway, on the basis that some new bit of gas powered kit might emerge in the future and be suitable to go in...

Capped 15mm gas pipe stub, in a strange location

At the risk of asking a daft question, how do you know for certain the 15mm is gas other than the general proximity to where you know you have 22mm gas pipe runs? If I saw a capped 15mm sticking out the wall in an understairs cupboard, especially in an older one bathroom property, my assumption...

ES and the Screwfix 38380 unbranded internal door latch failure warning - check yours!

Just highlighting a product that is unfit for purpose where both examples in my case had failed with the latch jammed out (thankfully, with only one door shut). Even if I had cut out a couple of inches of door frame to try and get to the latch, it still wouldn't have pushed back in either case...

ES and the Screwfix 38380 unbranded internal door latch failure warning - check yours!

Was heading into one of our bedrooms this morning, only to find that I couldn't open the door - the latch was jammed solid. There was no warning of impending failure. All our doors were replaced at the same time some years back - so I checked around and found another bedroom door latch was...

Disability shower trays - outlet flow question

I did eventually find an answer to this so posting it up in case anyone else hits this issue. It transpires from a discussion with one of AKW's techies, that contrary to the product details, there isn't actually any reason why the Sulby 2 tray can't have a waste running the full length...

Nuie Ivo cistern water inlet design

Just fitting a Nuie Ivo close coupled comfort height toilet today as part of a bathroom refit for my mum and dad. I've come across one or two challenging loos in the past but this one is a bit more annoying than most and I wondered if anyone else has seen something similar, and if so, what...

    Constant blocked drain issues

Whilst wipes can be a problem (even "flushable" ones), there is probably something else causing the issue if it's that frequent. One easy check is to see if there is a toilet soil stack near to the kitchen - because if there is, they may well join together on your property OR may go separate...

asbestos testing - diy asbestos testing kits and lab results

The Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) offer an asbestos lab testing service by post which I have used a couple of times, most recently in 2017 to check an Artex sample. https://www.iom-world.org/lab-services/asbestos-sample-testing/ It was more than £25. Have a feeling it was around...

    Unpleasant smell in 2 bathrooms

I tend to support @opps viewpoint on this, that one possibility is poor waste pipe configuration. Toilet/bath/basin/shower should ideally be on their own pipes into the soil stack - but its surprising how often people tee basins/showers/baths into the same waste pipe for convenience. What can...

Core drilling for a 40mm pipe and tile removal - Titan SDS thoughts?

Just to close the thread on this, I ended up going for the smaller/lighter 3.27KG Titan from Screwfix and it was easily up to the core drilling job I had lined up for it. Tile removal was really easy with it too. So a good compromise given I won't use it much going forward.

How to get rusted-up bolts/screws free with restricted access - help!

Some things to consider rather than a recommendation, as mine is a Bosch PMF180E mains one which I paid £70 quid for many years back. Been really happy with it but it has been superceded. Only tiny niggle is the blade is secured with an allen headed bolt but I can live with that. Mains or...

How to get rusted-up bolts/screws free with restricted access - help!

I've a few tools I've only ever used occasionally - but they can still pay for themselves. In your case, a few quid on a basin wrench is a no-brainer to me because sometimes, there's no better thing than the right tool for the job. You could also have bought a half-decent multi-tool for...

How to get rusted-up bolts/screws free with restricted access - help!

Screwfix and the DIY sheds sell basin wrenches for taps. They will likely work on the valve input back nut too. I have one like Screwfix 528RH and also one like 868XR. The latter is a bit fiddly but sometimes easier to get into tight spaces + it adjusts itself to the nut you're working on + the...

    HELP Header Tank not draining

Probably your only option to try if you can't sort the root cause and need to get things operational quickly whilst you work out what to do next.

How to replace this kitchen sink tap?

Good question - given the concern you most often hear about any push fit system is whether the seals will stand the test of time, rather than the body. The only genuine advantage I can think of is if you're using copper pipe, they should preserve earth continuity as the pipes should be earth...

How to replace this kitchen sink tap?

@evildrome Just for info, those isolating valves are de-mountable metal push fits similar to this, and yes they can be taken apart - but its a bit harder than plastic push fits as the copper ring needs to be pressed in evenly to release the pipe grips and kept pressed in whilst the pipe is...

How to get rusted-up bolts/screws free with restricted access - help!

Suggestions: Nut splitter - (e.g. 535HP at Screwfix) but I suspect your space around the nut might be too restricted even for a small one, and you will struggle with working space. Bulldog BDX - if your valve hasn't completely failed so you're not in a hurry, this penetrating fluid is much...

    HELP Header Tank not draining

Ours is like that too - and DOES fill OK from the F&E tank as you expected yours would. Worth checking to see what check/gate valves you have on your system. We have one on the mains cold input to the F&E tank to make it easier to shut off a defective ball valve - and that's pretty standard...

Disability shower trays - outlet flow question

Currently re-fitting my parents bathroom for assisted showering. This is onto an unbreachable concrete floor so I need to run a pipe out the side of the (raised) shower tray and box it in. There are two variants of tray I'm looking to buy, where these trays have a built in anti-slip surface and...
