Thanks everyone for your help, this also explains why there's a separate pump for the central heating. I did think it was a primatic cylinder, which has put me off using cleaners and inhibitors in the past, happy I can now add some treatment.

My thoughts exactly, it looks just like wood in some parts. Whatever is in place is flexible and had lasted a good 5 years, so would love to know what it was. I'll have to have a look into ct1 sealant I think. Cheers

Yes it's block paving, I've been told elsewhere to dry mix sand and cement at a ratio of 4:1, but to use sharp sand... Would you still recommend using kiln dried? I've got no idea about this kind of thing.
