Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

EFL I might have misunderstood your posts - i'm a newbie please forgive me. As far as I can see, your posts on p1 said: "This doesn't match your description of the original wiring." "I am hesitant to offer you any further advice at this time. Could we have a picture of the wiring...

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Thanks sparkwright. I've tried wiring it red to light live, earth to earth, black and red with black tape to neutral, and it's now working correctly as it was before. So we seem to have got there in the end - i'll see about getting a guy in to check the earth.

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Hey... Sorry, it was a red wire with black tape (rather than the other way around). This red wire with with black tape also had the care copper earth wire in with it. There was a separate red wire and a separate black wire coming from the ceiling.

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Ban all sheds - thanks, I read those the other day. Familiar from my physics A-levels many moons ago. EFL - i've got no beef with you, but the post saying, "try again" and nothing else wasn't very helpful. I know the wiring is different, but what I was looking for was some advice as to how to...

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

EFL Impudence Try giving a helpful answer rather than a patronising one. I've hung around enough forums to see what happens when that occurs, and I'm not very interested in someone making smart comments. I've come here looking for help rather than people looking to take the ****... I...

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Ok chaps. Unless you've any more advice to give, i'll check out now. Sorry fellas. I'm an intelligent guy, albeit not one with the grounding you've had, and I know you're trying to help, but you're not really explaining. I'd appreciate a leg up here. If you're not willing to help out...

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Answering some of the other questions from earlier... Coming from the ceiling there are three wires: 1. One black 2. One red 3. One red with black tape, and bare copper earth which has had a standard green and yellow sleeve pushed onto it. On the back of the switch at the wall, there...

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Hi The plastic terminal was wired by the previous residents. We moved in about a year ago and i'd not had cause to investigate it until now... i'd not assumed anything for this - that was simply how it was when I opened it up.

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Hi guys I appreciate the suggestion to get a proper spark in, but i'd like to try and learn some stuff and that's why i'm asking here as i'm seeking advice on what I can do first! I've no objection to picking up a multimeter or similar if that's what is needed. Next question is, with the...

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Now that I can answer as I wrote down before I removed it... In order from left to right across the 8 sockets... 1. Blue (light neutral) 2. Red with black tape (assume switched line) 3. Black (neutral) 4. Nothing 5. Nothing 6. Nothing 7. Red (live) 8. Brown (light live) In...

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Anyone else with any other thoughts? Earthing aside, does it look like I have a correct complement of wires up there, and does the wiring i've done look correct? I'm thinking there should be another live somewhere which will connect to the live i've got in the spare slot on the chock block.

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Right, so i'll have a rummage around in the cavity and see if there's one hiding back there. The switch on the wall itself is plastic and so doesn't need an earth - am I correct there? Looking round the back of the switch, it just has the lives running to it.

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Hi mate Thanks for replying - one of the wires coming from the ceiling is an earth wire. The new metal chandelier has two earth wires coming off it also - one which I can see is clearly attached to the metal frame, and terminates at the chock block - the other runs down with the main bundle...

Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Hi all First time poster here... i've got a bit of an issue trying to wire up a new light in my living room. I've had a browse around the wiring diagrams that were provided in the sticky on this area and used one as a basis to start, but haven't quite got it right I think. Here's the...
