Designing shed/workshop from scratch ... advice?

Ok, so I'm onboard now with the brick plinth concept, but what bricks would people recommend? Does it need engineering bricks for strength, or is a nice-looking facing brick going to be acceptable?

How difficult is very basic bricklaying?

Regarding joints, is the bucket-handle the go-to for this sort of stuff, or is there another one to use for any reason?

How difficult is very basic bricklaying?

Thanks for the advice all. Sounds like something I might well attempt then!

How difficult is very basic bricklaying?

I don't want to take anything away from proper bricklayers, who I know would do the job ten times faster and without any concerns about the quality of the end result, but if I wanted to build a small garden wall, or (as in this instance) I want to build a simple two-course plinth on an existing...

Designing shed/workshop from scratch ... advice?

That's really interesting. The only thing I don't quite get is how to attach the frame to the base if I'm not using the two courses of bricks. Just put a DPC strip underneath them and then bolt them to the base for strength?

Designing shed/workshop from scratch ... advice?

Thank you. Interesting that you talk about a timber deck on slabs ... are you saying put the slabs on top of the concrete base? What's the benefit there ... that the air gap would be better than a DPC then a deck directly on the concrete? I guess that the concrete slabs (by which I'm assuming...

Designing shed/workshop from scratch ... advice?

Hiya, I'm replacing a "package" 10' x 20' shed and will be building it from scratch. The quality of the shed was not high in the first place, and it's now leaking and generally damp, and is also not well organised. I'm moderately experienced in building larger projects (I've designed and built...

Confirmation before purchasing materials for decking/pergola roof

According to The Sagulator, just one of those rafters should be able to support the load of a single sheet ...

There is no support in the middle.

Confirmation before purchasing materials for decking/pergola roof

Sorry .... confusing terminology on my part. The rafters are 4.5m in length, and they are covering a roof that's 7m wide.

Confirmation before purchasing materials for decking/pergola roof

I'm about to buy the materials for my decking roof, but just wanted to get a quick sanity check please, before doing so. I'll be buying box profile 32/1000 sheets and some purlins to support them. My decking roof comprises 2x4 rafters of length 4450mm spanning a roof of 7210mm at 525mm centres...

    Decking roofing

I designed and built it, so in terms of design, I know it was never intended to have a "proper" roof on it. The rafters themselves should be fine (C24 6x2, 4.5m span, 525mm centres), it's more about the structure. The dimensions are 4m by 6m, with a 3x3 grid of 4x4 posts supporting it (hidden...

    Decking roofing

Thank you. I am a bit concerned about sag in hot weather if I don't add purlins ... do you think that would be an issue? I'm loth to add sheets of anything on top of the roof, because of the weight ... it was never really designed for that much extra load, although I do think it can handle...

    Decking roofing

Hiya. Hoping for some advice on roofing, please. I built this deck a couple of years ago ... ... and am very happy with it, for the most part. We put some bamboo matting on top to give us some shade, and it's honestly performed the job quite well. In the recent winds though, it suffered quite...

How to get prices for a loft conversion?

We've just got planning permission (home counties area) for a loft conversion and second-storey extension, and I'm after some advice on how to get realistic prices, please. We currently have a square box 8.5m x 7.5m with a four-hipped roof and a 4m single-storey kitchen extension coming out the...

Workshop base layers - is this a good plan?

The concrete base is already there! The studs will be 2x4. It’s just the battens underneath that are 2x2s.

Workshop base layers - is this a good plan?

I guess 2 inches from the 2x2 battens, if I’ve understood your question correctly.

Workshop base layers - is this a good plan?

Apologies if this is a duplicate, but I have tried searching for exactly my situation without success. I have an existing pre-fab shed on a 6m x 3m concrete slab but it's rotting and has been flimsy from when it was first built. I'm looking to replace it with a custom build (partly so it's...
