Cost to repair cracked soil pipe?

Just to close this thread off - I got another quote, for £230 + VAT, 1/3 of the original £800 quote! It took two guys just over one hour to cut out the damaged sections and replace them. Thanks @Agile for the sensible advice to get another quote.

Cost to repair cracked soil pipe?

I have thought about that, our excess is £500 though so it's still going to sting! Was thinking if it was possible to get the repair done for less, at a price close to the excess, then it might be better to avoid going through the insurance? Haven't had to make a claim before, not sure how much...

Cost to repair cracked soil pipe?

The quote is to replace the stack. The cracked section is the elbow of the T-piece and the lower part of the vertical stack. There's some "emergency repairs" my Dad did on the damaged section that at least reduced the amount of water leaking out, but combined with the tight space means it's not...

Cost to repair cracked soil pipe?

Hi, I clipped the soil pipe on the side of my house when reversing my car up our driveway  It cracked around the T-junction where the horizontal pipe coming from inside the house joins with the vertical soil pipe on the external wall. I had the boiler serviced just before Christmas...

    Water ingress, possible penetrating damp?

I didn't spot that possible hole, so I'll take a look. Fortunately it's low down that I'll be able to get a close look from a ladder. The wet patch reappeared last night. It has been very cold the last few days but with no rain or snow, so I think that pretty much confirms that the root of the...

    Water ingress, possible penetrating damp?

What could I do to insulate that cold spot? Could I place some e.g. rockwool along the top of the exposed plasterboard that's between the joist and the wall? Should I block off that air gap at all, or should it be left open to let air circulate?

    low disk space

The machine seems of a similar type to one my wife bought several years ago. As flameport says, it could be that the hard drive in this case is basically a glorified USB flash drive soldered onto the motherboard, i.e. not a "regular" hard drive you can swap out, in which case you're stuck with...

Wet/damp patches at side of patio doorframe

Hi, I got a new patio door fitted recently (June 2022) which I noticed has some dark patches along one edge inside (1st photo). The door and installation should be covered by a guarantee, but before I get the company out to take a look I wanted to get some advice about what might be causing...

    Good time to replace radiators?

Thanks mate. Like I said above I plan to drain the CH in the summer. Unless the water looks terrible, I won't bother with a power flush. Thanks to everyone who has replied as well, you've probably saved me a decent bit of cash (y)

    Water ingress, possible penetrating damp?

I had another look tonight, and I think in the corner I could maybe see some plasterboard that had blistered as if it had been wet (though it was dry to the touch). I've marked that with a red arrow on the photo below. That corner is a cold spot though, there's a cold draft there, coming from...

    Water ingress, possible penetrating damp?

You are right that rafter is darker than the others, but I think it looks darker than it really is in that photo. I took another photo (below) with a bit better lighting, which I think looks more accurate. The rafter has never felt wet at all at any point, and if it was so wet the water had...

    Water ingress, possible penetrating damp?

The time on the photos isn't correct - 8:44pm I edited them, but I took it earlier in the day. The gable end is definitely west facing. I hadn't thought of water getting possibly under the end caps in that way though. Obviously wind does sometimes blow from the east, so it's possible. Thanks...

    Good time to replace radiators?

I did think of that, I was going to play dumb and pretend to be enquiring about a boiler I was going to install rather than discuss one I already had! Regarding flushing/cleaning to BS7593 - the system was flushed out and given a chemical flush during install, and that is marked on the...

    Good time to replace radiators?

They all seem to heat up okay. I get the occasional cold spot from air trapped in the system, that needs bled out, but otherwise the don't seem to have any obvious cold spots.

    Good time to replace radiators?

Hi everyone, Thanks again for all your inputs. I've decided that I'll just leave it for now. If it's relatively easy to drain, check the water, refill and add inhibitor as a DIY job, I'll give that a go when the warmer weather returns. If the water looks dodgy then, I can consider what to do...

    Good time to replace radiators?

Thanks Madrab - I'd replied before I saw your reply too. There is indeed a mag filter on the return, near the boiler. The engineer who serviced the boiler last week said the mag filter looked dirty when he checked it, which prompted his suggestion for a power flush.

    Good time to replace radiators?

Given the age of the CH and previous boiler, and the fact that I don't think the previous owners were particularly good at maintaining stuff around the house, I'm inclined to believe that the recommendation for a power flush is genuine rather than the service engineer trying to "upsell". I'm...

    Good time to replace radiators?

Hi, I'm just wanting to get some advice as to whether it's advisable for me to have some/all of my radiators replaced. I had a new combi boiler installed about a year ago, shortly after we moved in. During the install the system as given a chemical flush. I had an engineer give the boiler its...

    Water ingress, possible penetrating damp?

Just to add to that: - I did not see or feel any dampness or water on the insulation, beams, roof tiles or wall above/near the leak. - In the second to last photo there looks like a possible crack running along the underside of the soffit. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get high enough...

    Water ingress, possible penetrating damp?

Hi, Here's a photo of the wet patch from in the bedroom. The wall on the right is the gable end (plaster over brickwork), the wall section above the cupboard door is plasterboard. This is the loft directly above the corner of the bedroom, with the insulation rolled up. Here's a view of the...
